Reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Success, the Director of the Office of Student Research (OSR) advances the office's mission to nurture and encourage students with their academic experiences by expanding opportunities that facilitate, support, fund, and recognize student research and mission-related creative and scholarly projects.

Initiatives led by the Director of the OSR will significantly contribute to Roosevelt University's strategic initiatives of centering student research a primary source of engagement that promotes recruitment, retention, and student success by nurturing a sense of belonging in the RU learning environment.

Specific duties include direction of strategic planning, administration, and research instruction and resource development; and should be carried out in alignment with the vision, approach, and values for the office as described below and the distinctive place of Roosevelt University within higher education.

The salary range for this position is $75,000-77,000

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Master's degree from a research program in social sciences, humanities, or physical sciences
  • Knowledge of research practices across disciplines (humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, arts, business)
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and administrative skills in coordinating research programming with university faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Excellent program administration and office management skills
  • Experience mentoring diverse students in research
  • Experience supporting diverse scholars with research

Essential Job Functions

Duty and Responsibility

Administration:

  • Sets annual budget in coordination with the Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Success and the Director of Research & Sponsored Programs (as needed, related to sponsored support) to support strategic planning; tracks expenditures and maintains related documentation
  • Collaborates with Vice Provost and Director of OSPRS to establish plan for tracking student involvement in research activities; creating metrics by which we can assess programming access, reach, and impact to ultimately increase the proportion of students participating in research and the proportion of research students participating in OSR programming
  • Provides logistical support for students and faculty receiving OSR funding and/or support
  • Directs the planning, coordination, and implementation of annual university student research programming including symposia, orientation activities, and workshops
  • Provides administrative support for day-to-day operations, OSR communications, programming, and events, including advertising and budget management.
  • Hires, trains, and mentors all OSR staff and delegates clear responsibilities that are relevant to the mission of the OSR (as the needs and budget of the office allow for expansion to include direct reports for which the Director will serve as their supervisor)

Percentage Of Time 50 Duty and Responsibility

Research Instruction & Resource Development:

  • Provides and/or coordinates trainings, presentations, and workshops on a range of research-related topics
  • Advises students interested in internal and/or external research opportunities, as those students and opportunities arise
  • Assess the OSR digital hub, website, blog, & all other secondary outreach sources, including research resources to streamline information; restructure to promote accessibility, uptake, and our ability to measure access and use; and ensure content is mission- and need-driven.
  • Liaises with RU Library (Chicago, Schaumburg, and Performing Arts) and RU Institutional Review Board, when appropriate, to ensure student research adheres to best research practices and generally to create a comprehensive plan to align our programming and resources to advance our shared mission regarding the responsible conduct of research and related activities
  • Liaises with specific courses and programs where student research is a part of the curriculum (e.g. English 102: Introduction to Academic Research, the Honors Program for their senior thesis requirement, and the McNair Program) to support instructors and coordinators as determined to benefit the students (e.g. advising on research topics, approaches, practices; communicating with faculty mentors; preparing for application submissions, meetings, presentations, conferences, etc.)

Liaises with the following RU Offices:

o Office of Admissions, Academic Advising, and colleagues specifically working with prospective and current students to develop processes and align programming that guides students interested in research toward courses and opportunities to include research in their path to graduation, and their post-graduate plans, at Roosevelt.

o Marketing and Communications to thoughtfully and strategically promote OSR programming, and to amplify the messaging of this office related student voice and celebrating the successes and opportunities of student research

o Career Services to broadcast our shared messaging related to the transferrable nature of research skills and experiences; coordinate trainings to demonstrate how students can see the value of their research experiences and reflect that in their resumes and conversations about their qualifications; and expand our collaborative Career-Intensive Program and cohort of student researchers leading up to and include the Roosevelt University Symposium.

o Alumni Relations (Alumni Engagement) to see how we can report on the journeys of student researchers post-graduation, and invite them to return and share with current students

Percentage Of Time 30 Duty and Responsibility

Strategic Planning:

  • Refine key OSR processes and practices and design the tools and organizational structures that will support all programming and related activities efficiently and effectively
  • Sets plan to strengthen internal partnerships and expand connections across both RU campuses with faculty and administrators to advance the mission of the office and create a shared goal of developing comprehensive research support infrastructure
  • Establish an OSR presence on Roosevelt University's Schaumburg campus, as student needs indicate.
  • Conducts needs assessments across RU, specific to research-related supports, and proposes the related staffing and resource needs of the OSR
  • Provides guidance to researchers and program administrators on student research and research programming best practices, and stays current on best practices through professional memberships, and attending webinars, trainings, and conferences.
  • Directs outreach to community research initiatives & community partners (non-profit, for-profit & government sectors) on behalf of the OSR to increase student exposure and participation in applied research
  • Guides development of CURE programming & implementation; convenes upper administration, deans, department chairs and program directors and faculty to align with current academic initiatives, programming & evaluation plans
  • Organizes cohorts of faculty implementing CUREs, mentoring student researchers, or otherwise engaging with OSR programming to create space for peer-to-peer learning, support, and ideation
  • Identifies, contributes to and/or leads funding proposal development for general student research initiatives; serves as a resource for faculty partners on their proposal development to increase CURE and student research funding.
