Job Description:
The Director of Student Leadership and Engagement (DSLE) at Bunker Hill Community College reports directly to the Dean of Students and plays a pivotal role in enriching the college experience through developmental and educational opportunities outside the traditional classroom setting. The role involves coordinating and implementing campus-wide programming accessible to all students, supporting student-led initiatives such as events, clubs, and organizations, and collaborating with the Dean to mentor the Student Government Association.
The Director is expected to actively attend, support, and provide oversight for student activities, signature programs, leadership initiatives, campus traditions, and other high-engagement events throughout the academic year. The DSLE is responsible for developing leadership programming that contributes to student growth outside of the classroom, including leading the student engagement components of the College-wide orientation program Campus Connect, New Student Convocation, the New Student Leader Retreat, supporting Commencement, and assisting with efforts to build and maintain the BHCC alumni database and network.
This position requires partnering and collaborating with departments across the College to coordinate events and engage students in leadership and learning opportunities. The Director provides leadership in developing campus-wide initiatives in the areas of programming, engagement, outreach, assessment, and leadership development. Additionally, the DSLE works with students facing academic challenges to connect them with appropriate campus resources, supporting student retention and success, and develops theme-based programming that reflects both the local and global perspectives of the BHCC community.
The role also involves fostering a supportive and dynamic environment that encourages student involvement, leadership development, and engagement both on campus and virtually. The Director will be responsible for supervising all staff within the office, including professional staff, administrative/clerical staff, and student employees, ensuring efficient and effective operations. Responsibilities:
• Provide on-site leadership and oversight for signature campus programs, events, and student activities, including evening and weekend programming as needed.
• Serve as a visible advocate for student engagement and inclusion through consistent attendance and presence at campus and community programs and events.
• Engage meaningfully with students, families, and guests attending programs and events, serving as an ambassador for the student experience during high-engagement times.
• Maintain an active presence on both the Charlestown and Chelsea campuses.
• Organize and implement campus-wide programs accessible to all students that contribute to a vibrant and inclusive campus environment.
• Support the development and management of student clubs, organizations, and programming initiatives that foster student creativity, leadership, and community building.
• Utilize identity development theories and student development frameworks to inform leadership programming aligned with Institutional Learning Outcomes and the College’s mission.
• In collaboration with the Dean, provide guidance and mentorship to the Student Government Association to strengthen student leadership and institutional engagement.
• Collaborate with academic departments and campus offices to promote student participation in leadership development and engagement opportunities.
• Develop a formal Student Leadership Program Plan and accompanying assessment strategies that support student engagement, leadership development, retention, and overall student success.
• Collect data, assess program outcomes, and report annually on leadership development initiatives and engagement programs to campus leadership.
• Identify and implement strength-based training modules and leadership development opportunities designed to enhance student engagement and retention.
• Support major College events and traditions including Campus Connect, Start Now, New Student Convocation, Welcome Week, Spring Day, Student Leadership Conference, New Student Leader Retreat, Compelling Conversations, and Commencement.
• Engage meaningfully with the College’s diverse student population and create programming that supports the success and belonging of all students at BHCC.
• Actively collaborate with academic and student support offices to strengthen student retention and engagement efforts.
• Provide overall leadership for the office and supervise all staff, including the Coordinator of Student Activities, professional staff, administrative/clerical staff, and student employees (including Student Engagement Leaders), with oversight of recruitment, hiring, training, and performance management.
• Facilitate weekly supervisory meetings and develop professional development and training opportunities for staff.
• Develop and oversee a structured leadership development program for Student Engagement Leader student employees, providing them with leadership training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
• Oversee the development, management, and strategic planning of the office’s annual operating budget, ensuring responsible stewardship of institutional resources and alignment with programmatic priorities.
• Work collaboratively with the Dean to review budget allocations, monitor expenditures, and support funding for high-impact student engagement and leadership initiatives.
• Perform related administrative duties, assignments, or special projects as required.

Salary: $100,000.00-$116,000.00 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
