The YMCA of the North-one of the largest and most dynamic nonprofit organizations in the region-is seeking an experienced Strategic Communications Expert. This full-time position offers a comprehensive benefits package, a free family Y membership, and more.
In-Person Attendance Requirement: Candidates must be located within reasonable commuting distance and able to adjust their schedule as needed to support regular, often daily, in-person collaboration.
The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000. We take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining salary; therefore, base pay offered may vary considerably depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes a wide range of other benefits and earned time off that vary depending on part-time or full-time status.
- Job Summary:
The Director of Strategic Communications and Social Content provides strategic oversight and leadership for the development and execution of internal and external communications, shaping organizational storytelling and producing high-impact social media content across TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Actively drive communication initiatives that keep team members and the community informed and connected, while strengthening the organization's external presence and ensuring alignment with organizational strategy, priorities and goals.
- Essential Functions:
Internal Communications (~40%)
- Develop, write and distribute internal announcements, newsletters, leadership updates and team-wide communications.
- Write talking points, scripts and messaging for leadership as needed.
- Maintain an internal editorial calendar and coordinate cross-team messaging.
- Support organization-wide campaigns with clear, timely internal messaging.
Public Relations & Organizational Storytelling (~20%)
- Assist with organizational announcements, press releases and public-facing messaging.
- Capture stories across departments, highlighting impact, culture and program success.
- Partner with Marketing, People and Culture and leadership teams to ensure message alignment and clarity.
- Capture member stories and testimonials by building relationships across YMCA locations and programs.
- Source leads and identify program impact opportunities that support marketing and PR initiatives.
Social Media Content Creation (TikTok/Short-Form) (~40%)
- Concept, script, shoot and edit short-form videos aligned with brand voice and content strategy.
- Develop recurring social content series that strengthen audience connection and brand affinity.
- Create content that balances mission impact, entertainment, education and audience engagement.
- Identify culturally relevant moments, trends and conversations that align with YMCA values and audience interests.
- Act as an on-camera personality or direct others as needed.
- Track performance analytics and optimize content for reach, engagement and follower growth.
- Help evolve the YMCA's voice and presence across emerging social platforms.
- Monitor trends and adapt content formats that increase visibility.
- Measure and report on communication effectiveness, audience engagement and social content performance to inform future strategy.
- Provide LinkedIn content support for the organization.
- Collaborate with Marketing and program teams to translate organizational priorities into platform-native storytelling.
- Relationships:
This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Communications, who reports to the Executive Vice President of Strategy and Chief Marketing Officer. The incumbent closely collaborates with the Vice President of Marketing and the Marketing/Digital team. The incumbent interacts regularly with business line and program leaders, managers, supervisors and other team members.
- Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in English, communications, public relations, journalism or related field; demonstrated experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Minimum of three (3) years of communications, social media, PR or content creation experience.
- Demonstrated ability to produce short-form video content (TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts).
- Excellent writing skills, particularly in clear, concise internal messaging.
- Strong storytelling instincts and comfort collaborating across teams.
- Ability to adapt quickly, juggle multiple deadlines and maintain brand consistency.
Preferred:
- Part communicator, part creator.
- Strong instincts for audience engagement and platform-native storytelling.
- Experience building or growing social audiences.
- Comfort with evolving industry standards including AI-assisted content workflows, rapid production environments, experimentation and emerging content formats.
- Ability to shift from drafting a CEO announcement to filming a trending TikTok in the same afternoon.
- Confident, witty and comfortable on camera (or behind the scenes directing talent).
- Proactive, curious and plugged into culture.
- Bi/multilingual.
- Physical Demands:
- Ability to work on a computer for extended period of time.
- Ability to travel to YMCA branches, camps or other locations.
- Ability to work irregular hours, as needed, to support urgent communication needs.
