SUMMARY

Serve as the Director of Sports Medicine for the Regis College athletics program including, but not limited to, the evaluation, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, including the use of therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation equipment, manual therapy, braces, and other devices under the direction of the team physician and in accordance with state licensure and practice acts. Additional tasks include, filing insurance claims, development of educational programming, reviewing and rehearsing emergency medical plans, and coordinating follow-up and ongoing care to student-athletes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Continually monitor, analyze, design and refine the Sports Medicine care delivery model to operate efficiently and provide the best care for the student-athlete population.
  • Develop guidelines and procedures according to NCAA, Conference and Regis College standards regarding student-athlete health and welfare.
  • Supervise and schedule Sports Medicine staff to allocate resources appropriately based on risk, demand and desired coverage and treatment outcomes. This includes practice and game coverage utilizing full-time staff and contracted per diem assistance when necessary.
  • Serve as the NCAA Athletics Healthcare Administrator (AHCA) for the Athletic Department and provide recommendations and updates to ensure that the department is staying up-to-date on important topics and operating within best practice recommendations.
  • Ensure that student-athletes are evaluated on an annual basis, including reviewing medical history to determine fitness for intercollegiate athletics and coordinate records with the Regis College Health Services and team physicians as needed.
  • Establish, administer, organize, and maintain physical examination, health insurance, injury, and treatment records and reports. Maintain records of athletic injuries sustained and treatments provided and report concussion data and any catastrophic injury per NCAA regulations.
  • Responsible for all aspects of Regis College concussion management plan, including annual policy review, baseline testing, including but not limited to neuropsychological testing.
  • Serve as key member of risk management team for Athletics Department. Advises coaching staff, athletic administration on the safety and sanitary condition of locker room, practice, and competition facilities and sites.
  • Evaluate and treat all athletically related injuries, including the use of emergency medical equipment (splinting, AED, airway devices, oxygen, etc.) and make appropriate determination of injury status and referrals to emergency medical care or physicians as appropriate. Consults with physicians, student-health services, coaches, parents, student-athletes regarding health status.
  • Design and implement pre-season and off-season rehabilitation programs and injury prevention programming based on perceived need and injury trends.
  • Supervise, maintain and make recommendations regarding the athletic training facilities and equipment, including the purchasing of all athletic training supplies and equipment within allocated budget parameters.
  • Works with the Regis College Health Services to evaluate and / or treat those students referred, including referrals to the Center for Health and Wellness for illnesses, eating disorders, diabetes, asthma, and psychological disorders.
  • Develop a relationship with area physicians and other allied health professionals to provide complete medical care to student athletes, including maintaining a relationship with a designated team physician.
  • Serve as the Department liaison with the representatives from the College health insurance plan, campus health center, and Center for Student Services office including coordinating intercollegiate athletic injury claims.
  • Assist with the drug and alcohol prevention program, including the NCAA drug test protocol when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIPPA, and other standards relative to sports medicine procedures and the operation of the athletic training room.
  • Recruit, instruct, supervise and evaluate support staff, e.g. interns, athletic training students, other assistants, per diems, both through the college work-study program as well as area NATABOC programs.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with campus safety, student health services, student life, business office, school legal counsel, and other campus departments.
  • Conducts in-service training to Sports Medicine staff. Including but not limited to Advance CPR, AED, Oxygen Administration, and blood borne pathogen training.
  • Serve as Lead ACI for local college Athletic Training Programs including supervising students during clinical rotation at Regis College.
  • Serve as the department's liaison with campus and community emergency response teams including coordinating and implementing an annual review of the department's emergency medical protocols.
  • Review insurance paperwork relevant to the Regis College insurance plan and NCAA policies.
  • Promotes health care information, advises and counsels student-athletes, parents, and coaches on matters pertaining to the physical, psychological, and emotional health and well-being of the competitive athlete and not to exceed the defined scope of his/her professional certifications and responsibilities.
  • Monitor environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and extreme weather situations. Make recommendations to ensure safety of student-athletes.
  • Perform helmet fitting and inspection for all teams utilizing such safety equipment. Provides recommendations on replacement, sanitation, and repair.
  • Participate in Athletic Department staff meetings, functions and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Supervise staff in accordance with College policy, federal and state law.
  • Select, supervise and evaluate graduate intern and all support staff for the sports medicine department.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED

  • Master's degree in athletic training or related field required.
  • National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) required.
  • Licensed as an athletic trainer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, BLS (Healthcare providers).
  • Instructor's certification to teach Red Cross First Aid and CPR courses preferred or able to obtain within the first year of employment.
  • NATA Approved Clinical Instructor preferred
  • Prior athletic training experience in a college setting required
  • Strong organizational skills and computer literacy required, including familiarity with EMR software (familiarity with HealthyRoster, Impact, SWAY is a plus).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills to work with various college constituencies
  • The ability to work a flexible and irregular schedule
  • Works well as a team member or independently
  • Excels in prioritizing multiple tasks with attention to detail, problem solving and follow-through to consistently meet expectations and deadlines
  • Strong management skills and mentoring ability for interns and assistants.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Conditions include a normal office environment, may be subject to extremes in temperature outdoors, noise consistent with sporting events (horns, buzzers, crowd and music), no extreme odors, or other major abnormal environmental issues.
  • Evening, weekend and some holiday work is to be expected
  • May spend extended periods at terminal, on telephone, or operating other office machines, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity
  • This position requires the ability to lift in excess of 40 lbs.

COMPENSATION: $68,000 - $72,000 (11 Months)
