POSITION TITLE: Director of Special Education and Student Services
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools
JOB GOAL: Directs the special education program for the district; ensures program
integration with the other instructional departments; and ensures
compliance with state and federal special education and 504 regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures educational compliance for students with IEP's and/or 504
accommodations
- Consults with staff, parents, and outside agencies such as DESE regarding
special education students, student services, and programs offered.
- Responds to parents regarding the evaluation and placement of their children.
- Discusses special education programs, personnel, and students with building
administrators and central office.
- Obtains funding from state and federal programs for special education and
student services.
- Submits program documentation for approval, applies for grants, submits
budgets and financial reports and prepares and submits program reports to
agencies.
- Develops and administers the special education budget in consultation with
the Central Administration.
- Monitors staff caseloads, staffing needs and student progress.
- Assists in recruitment, selection and recommendation for hiring of student
service providers/staff.
- Assists in the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs.
- Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special education and
504.
- Assists in the planning of staff in-service training activities.
- Coordinates Home Hospital tutoring services.
- Assists in the arrangement of Special Education and Homeless Transportation
services.
- Coordinates activities related to Medicaid reimbursement.
- Coordinates activities related to Circuit Breaker reimbursement.
- Serve as a liaison with cooperating institutions such as North River
Collaborative, Pilgrim Area Collaborative, South Shore Educational
Collaborative and READS Collaborative.
- Other duties may be assigned by the Superintendent or Designee.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees or directly supervises employees in the Special Education Department which
include the following positions:
- Out-of-District Coordinator
- Alternative and/or Sub-separate Education
- Preschool Academy - Special Education
- Nursing Program
- Counseling Program
- Speech/Language Pathologists/Assistants, Therapists/BCBAs
Responsibilities include the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these
positions in cooperation with building principals and other administrators.
Responsibilities further include interviewing, recommendation for hiring, and training
employees; planning, assigning and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving
problems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with specialization
in the area of special education administration, student services, and
supervisory experience.
- Massachusetts Educator's License as Administrator of Special Education
- Previous administrative experience
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Twelve-month, full year position
- Per Contract
