Assistant Superintendent of Instruction

Position Summary:

The Director of Secondary Education provides district-level leadership to support high-quality teaching and learning practices across secondary schools. The Director collaborates with administrators, instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and district teams to ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning. This position supports the implementation of district priorities through a team-based leadership model focused on continuous improvement, student achievement, and preparation of students for future success.

The Director of Secondary Education serves as a strategic instructional leader responsible for supporting grades 7-12 curriculum development, professional learning, instructional resource implementation, program evaluation, and leadership development across secondary buildings.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Leadership

Provide leadership and support for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of 7-12 curriculum maps across all content areas.

Collaborate with secondary administrators, teachers, and instructional teams to ensure curriculum alignment with Michigan Academic Standards and district expectations.

Support the implementation of evidence based instructional practices that promote rigorous learning, student engagement, and academic growth.

Partner with district and building leaders to support alignment between curriculum, instruction, assessment, and intervention, and enrichment systems.

Lead the review and implementation of secondary instructional resources and materials. Professional Learning and Instructional Support

Collaborate with district leaders and instructional coaches to design, facilitate, and evaluate professional learning.

Co-facilitate instructional coach PLCs focused on improving instructional practices and student outcomes. Support professional learning systems that address secondary instructional priorities. Promote teacher collaboration, professional reflection, and collective efficacy.

Secondary Program Evaluation and Improvement

Lead evaluation of secondary academic programs, instructional initiatives, and student support systems to determine effectiveness and impact on student learning.

Analyze student achievement data, graduation indicators, course outcomes, and other measures to identify trends and improvement opportunities.

Support secondary leadership teams in developing, implementing, and monitoring improvement plans. Assist with continuous improvement processes connected to district strategic priorities.

Team Leadership Development

Support the development of collaborative teams and teacher leadership structures within secondary buildings.

Provide guidance to building teams implementing district instructional initiatives.

Promote effective PLC structures and data-informed decision-making.

Strengthen systems that support communication, collaboration, and shared accountability. Secondary Program Oversight

Provide leadership and supervision related to secondary instructional programs, including sex education programming.

Support alignment of secondary programs with district policies, state requirements, and student needs. Collaborate with administrators and staff to evaluate and improve program effectiveness.

Instructional Resource Adoption

Facilitate the review, selection, implementation, and evaluation of secondary instructional resources. Ensure resources support curriculum expectations, instructional goals, and student needs. Support implementation fidelity through professional learning and coaching.

District Collaboration

Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and district leadership team to implement district instructional priorities.

Participate in district continuous improvement initiatives.

Support MTSS, equity, and student achievement efforts as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

Master's degree in education, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, or related field. Valid Michigan administrative certification.

Successful experience as a teacher leader, instructional coach, building administrator, or district-level leader. Demonstrated knowledge of secondary curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning.

Preferred:

Experience leading building or district initiatives.

Experience with secondary curriculum design and implementation. Experience supporting instructional coaching and collaborative teams.
