Director of School Transformation & Academic Excellence

Reports To: Executive Director
Purpose:
The Director of School Transformation & Academic Excellence serves as the chief
instructional leader, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across the K–12 program
at Carter G. Woodson School. This role provides strategic leadership in academic
excellence, school improvement, teacher development, curriculum implementation, and
student achievement.
The Director oversees key academic areas, including Instructional Coach, Dean of
Academics, Sr. Manager of Data, Assessment & Accountability, along with EC and EL
coordinators, Career Development, Student Services, and Internships. This role
collaborates closely with the Senior Executive Director, leadership team, staff, families,
and community partners to establish instructional goals aligned with the school’s mission
of cultivating academically successful, culturally grounded, and socially responsible
scholars.
The position also ensures compliance with NCDPI policies, charter accountability
standards, and all state and federal regulations while advancing the school’s commitment
to Afrocentric and culturally responsive education.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Instructional Leadership & Curriculum Innovation
• Provide leadership in curriculum development, implementation, and assessment
aligned with North Carolina Standard Course of Study and DPI expectations.
• Develop, implement, and monitor the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and funding
utilization for compliance to ensure continuous academic growth and student
achievement.
• Evaluate instructional programs to determine their effectiveness, alignment with
state standards, and impact on student learning outcomes.
• Lead the implementation of MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) and other
intervention systems to support diverse student needs.
2. Teaching Coaching, Development & Evaluation
• Supervise, support, and evaluate instructional staff to ensure alignment with the
North Carolina Educator Evaluation System (NCEES).
• Conduct regular classroom observations, walkthroughs, and instructional
feedback cycles to improve teaching effectiveness with the academic leads.
• Provide coaching and mentorship to teachers on instructional planning,
differentiated instruction, classroom management, and assessment practices.
• Coordinate and oversee the Beginning Teacher Support Program (BTSP) in
accordance with state guidelines.
• Design and facilitate professional development aligned with school improvement
priorities and instructional needs.
• Create systems for ongoing instructional feedback, reflective practice, and
teacher growth.
• Mentor and support academic leaders in strengthening instructional leadership
capacity.
3. Teacher Licensure & Compliance Management
• Oversee and maintain teacher licensure and credential compliance for all
instructional staff in accordance with North Carolina Department of Public
Instruction licensure requirements and charter school regulations.
• Provide guidance and support to teachers navigating licensure pathways,
renewals, and continuing education requirements.
• Collaborate with Human Resources and leadership to ensure proper staffing
credentials and documentation are maintained
4. Data-Informed Equity Leadership
• Supervise the collection and analysis of multiple sources of student performance
data to improve teaching and learning outcomes with the Sr. Manager of Data,
Assessment and Accountability.
• In collaboration with Sr. Manager of Data, Assessment and Accountability will
analyze school-wide academic data including benchmark assessments,
standardized testing, and internal evaluations to make informed decisions.
• Implement initiatives that support student academic growth, enrichment
opportunities, and intervention programs.
• Provide detailed reports and analysis of assessment data/performance reports,
including quarterly benchmarks and annual results, to the Board and leadership
team.
5. School Transformation & Community Engagement
• Lead and foster a positive school-wide transformation initiatives that improve
instructional quality and student outcomes while promoting respect, accountability,
and high expectations for all scholars.
• Collaborate with staff and community partners to strengthen family engagement
and school partnerships ensuring school initiatives reflect scholar voice,
community priorities, and cultural affirmation.
• Support the Scholar Success Specialist with behavioral, academic, and social-
emotional needs through restorative and supportive practices.
• Oversee the staff development sessions (small group and large group), programs,
and academic innovation initiatives.
• Evaluate direct reports to assess performance and identify growth and
development opportunities.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction,
African-Centered Education, or a related field.
• North Carolina School Administrator, Principal License (or eligibility to obtain
licensure) is preferred but not required.
• Experience in instructional leadership, school improvement, or school
administration.
• Knowledge of North Carolina education policy, charter school regulations, and DPI
accountability systems.
• Strong understanding of data-driven instructional leadership and student
achievement strategies.
• Demonstrated ability to lead equity-centered and culturally responsive
educational initiatives.
• Strong facilitation, mentorship, and community engagement skills.
• Deep knowledge of African history, philosophy, and culturally sustaining pedagogy.
