Reporting to the hospital Chief Operating Officer, the Director leads and advances pharmacy services within a highly visible and medically complex environment, overseeing an integrated, multidisciplinary pharmacy enterprise supporting a high acuity patient population. In this key leadership role, you will be entrusted with driving strategy, operational excellence, fostering innovation and collaborating closely with colleagues on system-wide initiatives.
As Director for HUP, you will partner with the University of Pennsylvania Health System Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO) to drive the system pharmacy strategy. The Director will be the pharmacist manager named on HUP's pharmacy permit. You will be accountable to standardize how medications are purchased and used to maximize cost-effective medication therapy while targeting strong clinical outcomes and ensuring safe medication practices across all facilities. HUP's Pharmacy Services include the following areas that fall under HUP's license: inpatient pharmacy, ambulatory surgery pharmacy, infusion pharmacies, investigational drug pharmacies, pharmacy services provided to outlying clinics and physician practices and the pharmacy at Rittenhouse and HUP Cedar Hospitals. The Director ensures that pharmacy operations and staff function in a collegial manner that fully supports the Health System’s teaching and research missions, including collaboration with colleges of pharmacy and other entities within UPHS.
Responsibilities include:
· Lead strategic planning efforts for Pharmacy Services, that promote the development of programs, services and initiatives to anticipate future patient needs, build customer loyalty, support improvement of patient outcomes and generate profitable, sustainable growth.
· Ensure high-level, consistent performance and a safe medication delivery system throughout HUP’s pharmacies and the pharmacy services provided to clinics and physician practices.
· Ensure effective and transparent reporting of medication availability to ensure high quality and safe care.
· Consult with and advise medical staff concerning information obtained on medications.
· Lead innovations and bring to scale improvement initiatives related to all aspects of pharmacy services.
· Lead an effective pharmacy governance structure that ensures achievement of pharmacy goals, aligned with Penn Medicine and HUP team goals.
· Ensures financial and operational compliance with all established federal and state regulatory rules and laws as well as professional standards set by national and local organizations.
· Provide appropriate management controls and stewardship of drugs and assets. Consistently achieve and/or exceed pharmacy capital and operating budget targets.
· Create a professional environment that identifies, recruits, nurtures, and promotes pharmacy talent. Build a deep level of engagement, alignment, and loyalty, while ensuring an effective pipeline for all levels of pharmacy staff and leadership.
· Ensures that all staff within the Director’s reporting structure demonstrates the professional and technical requirements and competencies of their respective jobs.
· Collaborates with UPHS CPO and other entity pharmacy leaders to develop and execute system initiatives.
· Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
Requirements
· Pharm.D. or Master’s Degree in Pharmacy required.
· Minimum of 10 years of progressive Hospital or Health-System Pharmacy Leadership experience, including experience in a large, complex Academic Medical Center required.
· Pharmacist License with the PA Board of Pharmacy required.
· PGY1/PGY2 Residency in Health-System Pharmacy Leadership preferred.
