Director of Nursing Job Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Indiana
  • Registered Nurse graduate from an accredited state-approved school of nursing
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in geriatric or long-term care nursing management
  • Medicare/Medicaid knowledge
  • Sub-acute experience preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred

 

Essential Job Functions

Organizes, supervises and evaluates the nursing department

  1. Develops and conveys the philosophy and objectives of the nursing department.
  2. Participates in the development of, and annual review of, policies, procedures, and job descriptions.
  3. Participates in the recruitment, selection and the retention of qualified and effective staff.
  4. Develops and maintains nursing staffing patterns in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  5. Works closely with QA Director and quality program.
  6. Participates in the development and implementation of in-service programs for nursing staff and other departments as indicated.

 

Supervises and evaluates resident care

  1. Assesses and evaluates overall health status of prospective and present residents to determine appropriate services or level of care – acuity of care.
  2. Performs assessments of potential residents with Admission Coordinator – determines appropriate placement.
  3. Schedules and performs rounds in all resident areas and visits residents on a daily basis.
  4. Provides consultation to Unit Coordinators and Shift Charge Nurses regarding policies, procedures, resident care and clinical monitoring.
  5. Assists in recommendations regarding physical, emotional, spiritual and rehabilitative needs.
  6. Supervises the organization of resident care conferences.
  7. Communicates with attending physicians or Medical Director as necessary to ensure that resident care needs are met and required visits/documentation are provided.
  8. Reviews incident/accident and 24-hour condition reports daily – visits target residents.
  9. Reviews weekly skin reports, infection reports, monthly weights, QA audits, restraint usage, etc.
  10. Investigates concerns/suggestions as assigned by Administrator – responds within five business days.
  11. Serves on an on-call rotation with Nursing Admin staff.
  12. Available to meet staff and residents needs 24 hours a day.

 

Adhere to State and Federal Regulations

  1. Participates in periodic surveys by Health Facilities Division, State Board of Health.
  2. Implements facility mini surveys to QA nursing services.
  3. Monitors and audits resident medical record documentation for adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  4. Completes and submits required forms and reports in a timely manner and/or as requested.
  5. Participates in development of annual nursing budget
  6. Monitors and coordinates contract services in nursing
  7. Monitors provision of physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy
  8. Meets with all levels of nursing staff on a periodic basis to exchange information, address issues affecting resident care to promote job satisfaction
  9. Participates in various committees (Policy/Procedures, Resident Review, Pharmacy, Quality Assurance, Ethics, Safety, Key Staff
  10. Remains current in pertinent professional literature
  11. Encourages innovative methods for delivery of care
  12. Seeks opportunities for personal/professional growth relating to long term care nursing delivery, gerontology, rehabilitation, organization theory, regulatory agencies, inter-personal skills, etc.
