Position Summary

The Director of Marching Arts is responsible for the development, implementation, and administration of a comprehensive marching arts program at Albright College. This includes leadership of the marching band (fall semester) and pep band (spring semester), as well as oversight of recruitment, student experience, staffing, and operations.

This position serves as the primary leader for a highly visible, student-centered program that supports institutional goals related to enrollment, student engagement, campus life, and community presence. The Director is expected to build and sustain a program grounded in strong musicianship, disciplined instruction, and effective organizational management.

Essential Job Functions

Program Leadership

  • Direct and conduct the marching band and pep band
  • Plan and implement rehearsals, performances, and related activities
  • Establish and maintain high standards of musical and visual performance
  • Oversee repertoire selection and coordinate production elements as appropriate
  • Recruitment and Enrollment Support
  • Develop and execute recruitment strategies in collaboration with Admissions
  • Build relationships with high school band directors and prospective students
  • Coordinate auditions, placements, and onboarding of new members
  • Support enrollment initiatives through performances and campus events

Student Engagement and Development

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable student experience
  • Develop student leadership structures, including drum majors and section leaders
  • Support student retention through consistent engagement and mentorship
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support student success

Staff Supervision and Coordination

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise instructional staff
  • Coordinate external design and creative personnel as needed
  • Provide direction, evaluation, and ongoing support to staff
  • Ensure alignment between instructional and production efforts

Operations and Program Management

  • Manage program scheduling, logistics, and event coordination
  • Oversee equipment, uniforms, and inventory systems
  • Coordinate travel arrangements and performance logistics
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures

Budget and Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the program budget
  • Monitor expenditures and ensure responsible use of resources
  • Participate in long-term planning for program needs and growth

Institutional Collaboration and Representation

  • Partner with departments including Admissions, Athletics, Student Life, and Advancement
  • Coordinate performances at athletic events and institutional functions
  • Represent the program and the College in public and community settings

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Teach marching arts ensemble courses within the academic curriculum
  • Contribute to the Department of Music as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music or a related field (Master's or Doctorate preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in marching arts, athletic bands, or similar ensemble leadership
  • Experience in program development, recruitment, and student engagement
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Experience in collegiate marching arts programs
  • Familiarity with contemporary marching arts practices and technology

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Evening and weekend work required
  • Extended hours during peak seasons (summer and fall)
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work outdoors
