The Role  

The Director of Insurance & Risk Management is responsible for setting and executing the organization’s enterprise‑wide risk management and insurance strategy. This role provides strategic leadership over risk identification, mitigation, insurance placement, claims management, and compliance. 

The Director partners closely with Executive Leadership, Finance, Legal, Network Operations, Engineering, and external stakeholders to protect company assets, ensure operational continuity, and support long‑term growth objectives.  

Work Location- Hybrid, Denver, CO  

Key Responsibilities 

Strategic Risk Leadership 

  • Lead the development and execution of the company’s enterprise risk management (ERM) strategy, aligned with business objectives and industry best practices. 

  • Integrate risk management considerations into strategic initiatives, capital projects, and technology deployments. 

Insurance Strategy & Program Oversight 

  • Design and oversee comprehensive insurance programs, including property (fiber assets and networking equipment), general liability, professional liability, cyber, auto, workers’ compensation, excess, and directors & officers (D&O). 

  • Lead complex annual insurance renewals, including carrier negotiations, retention strategies, benchmarking, and market placement decisions. 

  • Evaluate and implement alternative risk transfer solutions to optimize coverage and cost efficiency. 

  • Oversee relationships with brokers, carriers, and consultants; drive performance and accountability. 

Infrastructure & Project Risk 

  • Provide risk oversight for large‑scale infrastructure builds, fiber deployments, and contractor‑heavy projects. 

  • Ensure appropriate insurance and risk controls for construction, vendor management, and right‑of‑way agreements. 

Claims Management & Loss Prevention 

  • Establish governance over enterprise claims management, including high‑severity property, liability, and workers’ compensation claims. 

  • Oversee major claim resolution strategies in coordination with Legal, brokers, carriers and other service providers. 

  • Analyze loss trends and develop loss prevention initiatives to improve safety, reduce frequency/severity, and optimize performance. 

  • Monitor and report total cost of risk (TCOR) and identify opportunities for improvement. 

Regulatory, Contractual & Governance Support 

  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, contractual, and industry‑specific insurance requirements (e.g., municipal agreements, FCC‑related obligations, customer contracts). 

  • Provide executive oversight of insurance and indemnification provisions in major customer, vendor, construction, and leasing agreements. 

  • Support audits, regulatory inquiries, and internal controls related to risk management and insurance. 

Financial Management & Team Leadership 

  • Own the insurance and risk management budget, forecasting, and cost optimization strategies. 

  • Develop executive level reporting on insurance programs and performance, TCOR and key risk indicators. 

  • Lead and develop the insurance and risk management function, establishing scalable processes and best practices. 

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8–12+ years of progressive experience in insurance and risk management, with significant experience in communications, telecommunications, technology, or infrastructure‑driven industries.
  • Demonstrated experience working with executive leadership and managing enterprise‑level risk.
  • Professional certifications strongly preferred (ARM, CRM, CPCU, or equivalent).

Skills & Expertise

  • Deep understanding of insurance coverages and risk exposures specific to communications networks and technology operations. 
  • Strong strategic, analytical, and financial acumen, including TCOR management. 

  • Proven ability to negotiate complex insurance programs and manage large claims. 

  • Executive‑level communication and presentation skills. 

  • Ability to translate technical and operational risks into clear business‑level insights.

Compensation 

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors. 

Location Based Pay Ranges

$155,000-$215,000
