The Director of Facilities is responsible for the planning, operation, and maintenance of all campus facilities, building systems, and grounds. This position provides leadership for facility maintenance, repair, capital improvement planning, and operational support services to ensure a safe, functional, and well-maintained campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Director serves as a working leader, overseeing facilities operations while also actively participating in planning, troubleshooting, and operational execution.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operation and maintenance of all campus buildings, grounds, and infrastructure.
  • Ensure the reliable operation of building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and building controls.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance programs to extend asset life and reduce operational disruptions.
  • Manage work order systems and prioritize maintenance requests.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee campus renovation and improvement projects.
  • Work with architects, engineers, contractors, and vendors on construction and facilities projects.
  • Monitor project budgets, timelines, and scope.
  • Ensure projects comply with institutional standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervise facilities staff including maintenance technicians, custodial personnel, grounds staff, and other facilities personnel.
  • Schedule staff assignments and ensure appropriate coverage for campus operations.
  • Provide training, coaching, and performance management for facilities employees.
  • Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and service.
  • Develop and manage the facilities department operating budget.
  • Monitor expenditures for maintenance, utilities, contracts, and supplies.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
  • Assist with long-term capital planning and facility lifecycle budgeting.
  • Manage relationships with external service providers including HVAC contractors, electricians, plumbers, custodial vendors, and grounds contractors.
  • Negotiate service agreements and ensure contractor performance meets institutional standards.
  • Coordinate vendor access and ensure compliance with campus policies.
  • Ensure campus facilities comply with applicable safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards.
  • Coordinate inspections and address identified deficiencies.
  • Support campus emergency preparedness and response efforts related to facilities operations.
  • Maintain documentation related to safety inspections, maintenance records, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide facilities support for campus events, classroom operations, and institutional activities.
  • Coordinate space setups, furniture movement, and special event requirements.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance issues and facility emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management or related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 7-10 years of progressive facilities management experience
  • 3-5 years of supervisory/leadership experience
  • Experience managing building systems and facilities operations.
  • Knowledge of building systems, construction management, and regulatory compliance
  • Strong budget and financial management experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Understanding of building maintenance practices and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with building codes, OSHA requirements, and safety standards.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond to operational issues.
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities.
  • Professional certifications such as:
  • Certified Facility Manager (CFM)
  • Facilities Management Professional (FMP)
  • LEED Accreditation

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed both in an office environment and throughout campus facilities.
  • Position may require responding to after-hours facilities emergencies.
  • Lifting, climbing ladders, and accessing mechanical areas may be required.
