Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction
Reports To: Superintendent
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Cohort Development
Implement the Alabama Professional Leadership Development System for elementary (APLDS) evaluation tool districtwide to ensure rigorous standards for administrative performance.
Monitor, provide PD, and assist with the Alabama Teacher Mentorship Program for elementary to ensure new educators receive the required support and guidance for retention and success.
Serve as the District Course Manager for LETRS, coordinating cohort enrollment, tracking completion for state compliance, and providing technical support for the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling program.
Supervise and evaluate elementary principals, providing mentorship, professional guidance, and accountability for school performance.
Describe, interpret, and clarify elementary instructional programs, services, and initiatives to the Board of Education, staff, and the community.
Assist with developing and implementing district-wide E-Learning Days.
Collaborate with District Directors (e.g., Secondary Education, Special Education, Federal Programs, CSFO, and Operations, etc.) to ensure vertical alignment and cohesive implementation of district-wide initiatives.
Summer Programs & State Compliance
Oversee Summer Reading and Math Camps, ensuring all programs meet or exceed state expectations for instructional minutes, curriculum quality, and student engagement.
Monitor and supervise elementary summer camp operations, including staffing, site visits, and student outcome evaluations, to ensure state-mandated growth targets are met.
Audit and verify the PowerSchool Literacy and Numeracy tabs, ensuring that all data entry for student reading plans and intervention records is accurate, up to date, and compliant with state reporting requirements.
Retention & Promotion Pathways
Manage Third Grade Retention and Promotion Pathways, ensuring strict adherence to the Alabama Literacy Act and Numeracy Act.
Coordinate the identification of students at risk of retention and oversee the development of Student Individualized Reading Intervention Plans (SRIPs) and Student Plans.
Facilitate the communication and appeals process for student promotion, ensuring that parents and administrators understand the legal requirements and available support pathways.
Direct the implementation of the "3rd Grade and Beyond" state initiative, ensuring all instructional staff and administrators are aligned with state mandates for literacy achievement and student progression.
Fiscal Management
Develop and monitor over eleven state funds across multiple funding sources, ensuring strict compliance with state regulations and district financial policies.
Oversee the elementary curriculum and instruction division budget to ensure resources are allocated effectively to support student achievement.
Execute day-to-day financial operations, including creating and processing requisitions, managing purchase orders, and maintaining accurate financial records.
Manage vendor relations, serving as the primary point of contact for educational partners to negotiate services, clarify specifications, and ensure timely delivery of instructional materials.
Instructional Oversight & School Improvement
Oversee Elementary Building ACIPs (Alabama Continuous Improvement Plan), ensuring school-wide goals align with district strategic initiatives.
Support Elementary Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and Problem-Solving Teams (PSTs) by attending meetings and providing data-driven guidance for instructional decision-making.
Monitor and implement Elementary MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) processes and procedures to ensure all students' academic and behavioral needs are met.
Partner with state organizations and initiatives, such as AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative), to leverage additional resources, coaching, and instructional support for the district.
Oversee professional development (PD) elementary initiatives, ensuring alignment between elementary pedagogy and district-wide instructional standards.
Ensure rigorous implementation of the Alabama Literacy Act and the Alabama Numeracy Act, and monitor school-level compliance and student progress.
Lead the selection and evaluation of elementary core curricula to ensure alignment with state standards and Tier 1 instructional goals.
Coaching & Support
Supervise and monitor Math and Reading Coaches, including the management of their Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), and provide ongoing professional support to maximize their impact on tier 1 instruction.
Provide ongoing coaching and professional support to principals and instructional staff to maximize the impact of Tier 1 instruction.
Facilitate the development of cohorts and professional learning communities (PLCs) among elementary administrators.
Assessment & Intervention (Literacy & Numeracy)
Oversee screening processes for the Math Fractional Screener, Early Numeracy Screener, and Dyslexia Screener to ensure early identification of student needs.
Monitor Tier 2 and 3 Interventions in Literacy to ensure compliance with state mandates and the effectiveness of intensive student support.
Ensure all requirements of the Alabama Literacy Act and the Alabama Numeracy Act are implemented and tracked with fidelity.
General Curriculum Administration
Describe, interpret, and clarify district instructional programs and initiatives to the Board of Education, staff, and the community.
Develop and monitor the budget for the elementary curriculum and instruction division.
Evaluate personnel in compliance with district policy and procedures.
Extended Day & Supplemental Programming
Direct the implementation and supervision of after-school tutoring and Saturday school operations, ensuring all programs align with the Alabama Literacy Act and Numeracy Act.
Manage and process the necessary payroll forms for instructional staff and ensure all personnel expenditures comply with district financial policies.
Community & Parent Relations
Lead conflict-resolution efforts with parents and guardians, serving as a secondary escalation point for complex issues that cannot be resolved at the building level.
Maintain transparent communication with the community to build trust and support for elementary initiatives.
Skills and Abilities
Collaborative Leadership: Proven ability to work effectively with cross-departmental directors to streamline district operations and instructional delivery.
Conflict Mediation: Exceptional ability to navigate sensitive parent interactions and resolve disputes with professional diplomacy.
Regulatory Expertise: Deep knowledge of the Alabama Literacy Act and Alabama Numeracy Act.
Financial Acumen: Expertise in large-scale budget management ($800k+) and procurement systems.
Proficiency in Google Workspace and PowerSchool for monitoring student documentation and performance.
Project Management & Multitasking: Exceptional ability to manage several high-priority projects at once, balancing long-term strategic planning with immediate operational needs (e.g., simultaneous oversight of summer programs, budget cycles, and state compliance audits).
