Position Summary

The Director of Data Governance and Architecture leads the design and evolution of the College’s enterprise data architecture and governance framework, ensuring data is structured, integrated, secure, and accessible to support analytics, reporting, and emerging capabilities. This role establishes architecture standards, integration strategies, and data management practices that promote consistency, scalability, and long-term sustainability. In close partnership with ITS and under the direction of the Chief Data Officer, the position aligns data architecture with enterprise technology, cybersecurity, and governance priorities. The role also advances a centralized data ecosystem, enforces data quality and access controls, and enables shared data assets to support a single source of truth and responsible innovation across the institution.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads the design, implementation, and ongoing evolution of CNM’s enterprise data architecture and governance framework in alignment with institutional priorities and the strategic direction set by the Chief Data Officer. Ensures that data is structured, integrated, governed, and accessible in a way that supports analytics, reporting, and emerging capabilities across the college.
  • Defines and maintains the enterprise data architecture, including data models, integration patterns, and overall platform strategy. Establishes architecture standards and design principles that promote consistency, scalability, and long-term sustainability across the data environment.
  • Partners closely with Information Technology Services (ITS) to ensure the data environment is secure, reliable, and aligned with enterprise infrastructure, performance expectations, and cybersecurity practices. Works in coordination with the Chief Data Officer to align data architecture decisions with broader enterprise technology strategy.
  • Governs how data flows across systems by defining integration patterns, reducing point-to-point complexity, and enabling a coordinated and maintainable data ecosystem. Leads the shift toward a centralized and managed approach to data integration.
  • Ensures architecture and governance operate as a single, connected function by linking data standards, definitions, and stewardship directly to how data is structured, stored, and accessed. Works with data stewards and domain owners to operationalize governance within the architecture.
  • Implements controls and processes that enforce data quality, consistency, and integrity across the full data lifecycle. Establishes monitoring and accountability mechanisms to ensure adherence to governance standards.
  • Enables role-based access and data security models that translate governance policies into technical implementation, ensuring appropriate access while maintaining compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Establishes and manages shared data assets, including curated data layers and common datasets, to reduce duplication, improve usability, and support a single source of truth across the institution.
  • Designs the data environment to support advanced capabilities such as analytics, AI, automation, and intelligent workflows, ensuring the foundation is in place for scalable and responsible innovation.
  • Monitors and evolves the data architecture over time to support new systems, emerging technologies, and changing institutional needs. Continuously evaluates and improves the environment to maintain alignment with institutional strategy and priorities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field (required)
    • AND
    • Ten (10) years of progressive experience in data architecture, data engineering, or enterprise data management
  • Associate's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field (required)
    • AND
    • Twelve (12) years of progressive experience in data architecture, data engineering, or enterprise data management
  • Familiarity with and Preferred:
    • Data governance tools and practices
    • Cloud data platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP)
    • Security and access controls (role-based access, compliance)
    • Familiarity with regulatory environments (FERPA, data privacy standards)
