Summary

This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Director of Badger Central Bookstore and Cafe who will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for Amarillo Colleges auxiliary services, including the Badger Central Bookstore, Cafe, East Campus Tool and Supply Store, Mailroom, Vending Services, and other related retail operations. This position is responsible for driving exceptional customer service, operational excellence, fiscal sustainability, and revenue growth while supporting the Colleges mission and commitment to student success.

The Director oversees daily operations, financial performance, inventory management, vendor partnerships, marketing initiatives, and service delivery across multiple business units. Through collaboration with campus leadership, students, employees, and external partners, the Director develops and implements innovative strategies that enhance the campus experience, improve operational efficiencies, and foster a culture of accountability, engagement, and service excellence.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Management, Hospitality Management, Retail Management, Higher Education Administration, Marketing, or a related field.

Preferred: Masters Degree in Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.

  • Equivalent combinations of education and progressively responsible experience may be considered.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

Required: Food Manager Certification or the ability to obtain certification within thirty (30) days of employment.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience in retail operations, food service, auxiliary services, hospitality, customer service, or a related business environment.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience with responsibility for hiring, performance management, employee development, and operational oversight.
  • Experience managing budgets, inventory, purchasing, and customer-facing operations.

Preferred:

  • Experience leading multiple business units or service areas simultaneously.
  • Experience in higher education, government, public sector, or other complex service-oriented organizations.
  • Experience with contract management, vendor negotiations, and revenue-generating operations.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Badger Central Bookstore, Café, Mailroom, Vending Services, East Campus Tool and Supply Store, concession operations, and other assigned auxiliary services.
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term business strategies that support student success, enhance customer service, improve operational effectiveness, and contribute to the financial sustainability of auxiliary operations.
  • Lead, supervise, and develop management and support staff through coaching, performance management, succession planning, and professional development opportunities.
  • Establish annual goals, performance metrics, budgets, and operational plans that align with Amarillo Colleges strategic priorities.
  • Oversee departmental budgets, revenue generation, expenditures, inventory investments, purchasing activities, and financial reporting to ensure fiscal accountability.
  • Analyze sales trends, customer feedback, operational data, and financial performance indicators to identify opportunities for growth, cost savings, and service improvements.
  • Direct inventory management, merchandising, pricing strategies, product selection, and procurement activities to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Negotiate and maintain effective relationships with vendors, suppliers, publishers, contractors, and service providers to maximize operational value and customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and institutional regulations related to food service, retail operations, mail services, cash handling, inventory controls, and safety standards.
  • Develop and implement marketing, promotional, and engagement initiatives that increase awareness, participation, customer satisfaction, and revenue.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, student services, athletics, and campus leadership to support institutional initiatives, special events, and student engagement opportunities.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts through process evaluation, innovation, and implementation of best practices that enhance efficiency and service delivery.
  • Oversee point-of-sale systems, inventory management systems, reporting tools, and operational technologies to ensure accurate financial and operational reporting.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and recommendations for executive leadership regarding operational performance, financial outcomes, strategic initiatives, and future opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of service excellence, accountability, innovation, teamwork, and student-centered support across all operational areas.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of retail operations, food service management, auxiliary enterprises, inventory control, mail services, and customer service best practices.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, financial management, revenue generation, purchasing processes, contract administration, and business performance analysis.
  • Knowledge of applicable health, safety, sanitation, cash handling, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Skill in leading, coaching, mentoring, and evaluating staff within a multi-unit operational environment.
  • Skill in developing collaborative relationships with students, employees, vendors, community partners, and campus stakeholders.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to travel between campus locations and service areas. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and move materials and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

Working Conditions: Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.

Work Environment: This position operates in both professional office and customer-facing retail environments. The employee routinely uses standard office equipment and various operational systems, including point-of-sale, inventory management, and financial reporting software. Work is performed in a fast-paced environment with frequent interaction with students, employees, vendors, and visitors. Occasional work outside traditional office settings may be required.
