Position Summary

The Director of Athletics and Student Engagement is responsible for creating, leading, and managing initiatives that promote student engagement within Trenholm State Community College (TSCC). This role provides supervision of all student activities and events while overseeing the athletic department and ensuring compliance with National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) regulations and reporting requirements. This position provides strategic leadership for the development, oversight, and compliance of the College's intercollegiate athletic programs and student engagement initiatives. The focus is on fostering an inclusive learning environment and coordinating college-wide strategies that enhance the student experience, strengthen retention efforts, and support student success at a non-residential community college.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight, development, and compliance for all collegiate athletic programs.
  • Ensure compliance with NJCAA, ACCC, and all applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Oversee recruitment, eligibility, scheduling, travel, and academic monitoring of student-athletes.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate coaching staff and athletic personnel.
  • Develop and manage athletic budgets; pursue grants, sponsorships, and fundraising opportunities.
  • Ensure safety and proper maintenance of athletic facilities, equipment, and transportation.
  • Maintain required documentation and reporting for compliance and accreditation.
  • Provide direct leadership and oversight of student organizations and campus engagement initiatives.
  • Foster development of student leaders in clubs and organizations to plan events, recreational activities, volunteer initiatives, and fundraising efforts.
  • Support and supervise club advisors to ensure alignment with the student life mission and adherence to policies.
  • Administer and maintain guidelines and procedures outlined in the Student Club Handbook.
  • Collaborate with advisors to promote student learning, leadership development, and co-curricular engagement.
  • Train and supervise student employees supporting student life and engagement, including Student Ambassadors who conduct campus tours and represent the College at events.
  • Lead and execute new and returning student welcome activities.
  • Oversee student organization budgets and ensure appropriate financial stewardship.
  • Provide vision and strategy for student completion and retention through engagement initiatives.
  • Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of student involvement efforts.
  • Collaborate with Marketing/PR to promote athletic programs, student events, and campus resources through newsletters, digital platforms, social media, and print materials.
  • Develop partnerships with local schools, businesses, and community organizations.
  • Demonstrate cross-cultural competencies, including strong emotional intelligence, influencing skills, and the ability to build relationships with diverse and underrepresented communities.
  • Present the ability to form coalitions, inspire action, and foster collaborative partnerships.
  • Utilize strong interpersonal skills as an open-minded, strategic, and creative thinker with the ability to mediate diverse perspectives and address shared institutional goals.
  • Represent the College at athletic conferences, community events, and external meetings.
  • Serve on institutional committees and participate in strategic planning activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Affairs, Executive Vice President, or President.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a concentration in education, organizational leadership, sports management, or related field; master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in athletic administration, student engagement, educational leadership, or related area.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget development, and program management.
  • Knowledge of NJCAA athletic functions, rules, policies, and reporting requirements; familiarity with NCAA regulations preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge of athletic program operations, intramurals, extra-curricular activities, student-athlete support services, facilities management, and budget oversight.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high-impact college practices related to enrollment management, student engagement, and student success strategies.
  • Experience working directly with campus stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and students' families.
  • Collaborative leadership style with excellent written and oral communication skills.

Sick Leave

Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
