About NCG
Northern California Grantmakers (NCG) is a dynamic, growing membership organization that brings the philanthropic community together to shift resources, capital, and power back to historically marginalized communities that are leading transformational change. Northern California has a rich cultural legacy and commitment to social justice. NCG’s membership is made up of stakeholders across philanthropy including program officers, board members, donor trustees, movement organizers, communicators, visionaries, advocates, dreamers, and believers. We started as the “Lunch Bunch” in the 1960s, a group of philanthropic leaders committed to growing together. We formalized ourselves in the 1980s with the goal of supporting a base of philanthropic members. Currently we have more than 195 institutional and 4,500 individual members. For the past forty years, we have been working to gather, mobilize, and transform philanthropy. We believe in our collective power for good. Learn more about NCG at www.ncg.org.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Director for Donor and Trustee Engagement to lead NCG’s philanthropic leadership initiative, facilitate the educational journey of participating philanthropists, build partnerships with allied regional institutions, cultivate networks focused on implementing Five Shifts for Advancing an Equitable Region, and connect interested leadership to opportunities to advance systemic change within the region.
In 2022, NCG kicked off a multi-year action plan to support philanthropy in making these shifts toward sharing power, leveraging multiple forms of capital, centering equity, and implementing philanthropic practices demonstrated to yield significant, lasting change. Through this work NCG continues to advance proactive foundation leadership and practice, particularly within the trustee, CEO, and individual donor communities. This will require enhanced planning, programming, and communications in NCG offerings for these audiences.
2026 provides a critical window to build on previous work to leverage the region’s remarkable CEO leadership, cultivate increased trustee commitment to equity, and partner with donor advisors to unleash greater individual giving that meets the challenge of the current era. We believe these approaches will move more money into community and do so in ways that are supportive of nonprofit and movement infrastructure.
The Director is also responsible for the day-to-day management, coordination, and implementation of strategic goals related to this effort, including program development and project management, maintaining relationships throughout these networks, and the provision of research and technical assistance to members and prospects.
The Director works in close partnership with the President/CEO and the Vice President for Philanthropy and Impact. This position reports to the CEO.
NCG’s work recognizes the critical importance of centering racial equity, movement building strategies, and the leadership of movement organizations to advance democracy and promote equitable public policy. The Director must embrace racial equity as a core value and demonstrate high emotional intelligence to effectively work with people of diverse backgrounds and positively contribute to NCG’s culture as an organization committed to racial and environmental justice.
