Position Summary
TheNursingDirectorisanadministrativelevelmanagerforoneormorespecialtycareareaswithinthePatientCareServicesDivision. He/sheassumesresponsibilityandaccountabilityfortheoverallfunctioningofassignedunits/programs/service,workingincooperationandcollaborationwithmanagementnursesassigned 
toeachunit/program/servicetoassureoptimalpatientcare. 
Directsthedeliveryofnursingservicesandsafepatientcarewhichareintegratedwithbusinessplans thatmeetorexceedcost,quality, clinical,andutilizationstandardsandperformancemeasures. 
Inadditiontoperformingtheessentialfunctionslistedbelow,mayalsobeassignedotherduties     asrequired.
Qualifications
  • CurrentCaliforniaRNlicenserequired. 
  • Master'sDegreeinNursingfromanaccreditednursingprogramorequivalentdegreepreferred. 
  • CertificationEmergencyNurse(CEN)preferred. 
  • CurrentBLS,ACLS,PALSrequired. 
  • Five(5)yearsnursingpracticewithintheEmergency DepartmentasastaffRNrequired. 
Demonstrated5yearsofprogressivesupervisoryandleadershipexperienceinEmergencyDepartmentnursingleadershiprequired.

  Essential Job Responsibilities

  • InconjunctionwiththeAssistantVicePresident,ChiefQualityOfficer,definesandestablishesthedepartment'sphilosophy;goalsand ·objectivesdirectedatachievinghighqualitypatientcareinaccordancewiththemissionandstrategicplanofthe organization. 
  • CollaborateswithNurseManagers/AssistantNurseManagerstoestablishstaffingrequirements,recruitment,andselectionandretentionpoliciesforpersonnelinthespecificunits/programs/servicesofresponsibility. 
  • CollaborateswiththePhysicianChiefofStaff/MedicalDirectors. 
  • Utilizesavailableresourcestoproblemsolveeffectively. 
  • Accountableforfinancialperformance,budgetmanagementandresourceallocationofassignedservices. 
  • Performsassessment anddatacollectioninanongoingandsystematicmanner. 
  • Assessesdevelopmental,learning,orotherspecialneedsofnursemanagers,staff,patients,andfamilies. 
  • Assuresthatstaffcompetenciesareappropriateandvalidatedsothattheycanperformtheskillsnecessarytothekindofnursingactionstobetake. 
  • EvaluatestheeffectivenessofUnitandDivisionOperationsandadjustsprioritiesasneeded. 
  • Supportsroleand standards-basedpracticethroughrolemodeling,monitoring,preceptingevaluating,andprovidingfeedback. 
  • PreventstheacquisitionofHospitalAssociatedInfections(HAIs)byadheringtohandhygienepracticesandInfectionpreventionpolicesandinitiatives. 
  • Assumesresponsibilityforprojects/tasksandcompleteswithindesignatedtimeframes.
  • Responsibleforjobdescriptions,certifications,licenses,performancestandardsandperformanceevaluationsofallpersonnelinunits/programs/servicesofresponsibility. 
  • Functionsasaresourceinclinicalspecialty,demonstratingcompetencyinclinicaljudgment,selectedtechnicalskills, andevidencedbasedpractices. 
  • InformstheAVP, CQOofactivities,needsandproblemswithinareasofresponsibility. 
  • Assumesresponsibilityforcommitteesandtaskforcesatthedivisionallevelandparticipatesandrepresentsdefinedspecialtyareaanddivisiononvarioushospitalandmedicalcommittees. 
  • Ensurescoordination,integration,andmanagementofpertinentinformationthroughcriticalthinkinganddecisionmaking. 
  • Basedonjobknowledge,abletodirectandmanageclinicalsituationsthroughunderstandingofroles. 
  • Demonstratesanalyticalskillsbyusingdecisionmakingauthority,andscientificknowledgeinordertoimplementactionplans. 
  • Analyzesandusesdataandimprovementsuggestionsobtainedthroughshiftreports,unit-basedhuddles,andinteractionwithstaffatthefrontlineboard. 
  • UtilizestheProfessionalPracticeModelandcreatesasupportiveenvironmentforpracticebytheprofessionalRNrole.
  • Plans,organizes,directsandcontrolsdefined/assignedspecialtyareaswithinthePatientCareServices(PCS)divisionincompliancewithregulatory/evaluativeagencycodesandstandardsandlegalregulationstoassurethatnursingservicesprovideforsafety,comfort,hygiene,protection,diseaseprevention,andrestorativemeasuresforthepatientpopulationserved. 
  • Participatesinhospitalplanning,decisionmaking,andpolicyformulationasamemberofthehospitaladministrativestaff. 
  • Plans,develops,implements,andcontrolstheannualbudgetsforareasofresponsibilityincollaborationwithappropriateNurseManager(s). 
  • CollaborateswithNurseManagers,ClinicalNurseSpecialists,andtheEducationdepartmenttopromotestaffeducationprogramsincludingorientation,continuingeducation,skillreviewandtraining,andotherprogramsasdefinedbyregulatory/evaluative agencies. 
  • Functionstoestablishprioritiesofunitoperationsbasedonessentialpatientneedsandavailableunitresourcesoftime,personnel,equipment,andsupplies. 
  • Delegatestasksbasedonthelegalscopeofpractice,andon thepreparationandcapabilityneededinthetasktobedelegated.Supervisesdelegatedtasksappropriately. 
  • Developsandimplementsmechanismsforcollaborationbetweennursingstaffmembers,physicians,andotherclinicalpractitioners. 
  • Analyzesandutilizesoutcomedata,andperformancestandardstofurtherdeveloptheworkforceabilitytoengageinroleandstandards-based practiceandcaredelivery.
  • Assuresthatstrictconfidentialityguidelinesareadheredtobyallstaffmembers,bothintra-andinterdepartmentally. 
  • Actsastheclientsadvocatebyinitiatingactiontoimprovehealthcare,ortochangedecisionsoractivitiesthatareagainsttheinterestsorwishesoftheclient,andbygivingtheclienttheopportunitytomakeinformeddecisionsabouthealthcarebeforeitisprovided. 
  • Demonstratesawarenessandsensitivitytopatients'rightsandthepatientfirstethic. 
  • Participatesincommunity-basedactivitiesrepresentingtheinterestsofWashingtonHealth.

  • Seekstoimproveoperations,keep staffinformed,andreduce thecostprofileofunitorservice

  • Prepares and maintains clinical and administrative records and reports as needed/required to reflect the overall performance of the specialty area
  • Collaborates with nurse managers/assistant nurse managers to assure that regulatory/evaluative agency standards are met.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the legal issues and liabilities in all aspects of patient care. Promotes safe practice to reduce risk.
