Job Description

The Director, EHSSQ leads change through effective communication and collaboration providing clear and consistent messages, standards and programs encouraging a culture of health, safety, and environmental awareness for Grace’s Operations within a certain region. Primary responsibilities include ensuring compliance with all governmental environmental, health and safety regulations, quality compliance, and implementing Grace & industry standard best practices, and working collaboratively as part of the senior leadership team to guide operations and EHSSQ site management. The focus of the role is to lead safety culture and compliance regionally, as well as EHSSQ system implementation, where the organization operates in a healthy, safe, secure, sustainable, and environmentally responsible manner through the utilization of leading EHSSQ initiatives, policies, and standards employing a continuous improvement mindset. Accountable for the performance and results, and coordination for work between the EHSSQ organization and the global operations community.

The position reports to the Vice President, EHSSQ with a matrix reporting relationship to the Regional VP, Operations. Reporting directly to this role is the Regional Quality Specialist and indirectly to this role is a team of Site EHS Managers within region.

Responsibilities (1 of 2)

• Advances relationships with leadership, management, and employees to ensure EHSSQ policies and procedures are being applied and followed. Working with leadership, senior management, shares best practices across the organization.
• Advise and support senior leadership team on all EHSSQ activities, communicating initiatives, and establishing/updating and disseminating documentation relating to the EHSSQ performance.
• Collaborate closely with EHSSQ organization and leadership to develop and drive EHSSQ initiatives across assigned region.
• Champion global EHSSQ initiatives, focusing on preventive actions, that identify and communicate organizational risk exposure, prioritizing risk reduction needs and ensuring closure resources are provided.
• Monitor and ensure compliance to local, state/providence, and federal EHSSQ regulations.
• Ensures routine audits are conducted of facilities and processes to assess and identify safety, health, environmental, and quality risks.
• Manages and coordinates capital project activities related to EHS investments and improvements across the operations network.

Responsibilities (2 of 2)

• Develops, maintains, and ensures the reporting of relevant and impactful EHSSQ performance metrics.
• Ensure regular risk assessments are conducted on all processes and equipment and recommend appropriate controls when hazards or potential hazards are identified.
• Responsible for the overall administration, implementation, and control of EHSSQ programs and activities within the Global Operations organization.
• Leads and provides coaching to the operations and EHSSQ community towards goal achievement and results by driving the organization to be self-critical and committed to a continuous improvement culture. Establishes and monitors goals, objectives and measurements which drive the organization to a higher level of achievement.
• Develops strategies including business, production and/or organizational priorities that establish health and safety enterprise work strategy to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective performance that meets customer expectations and regulatory requirements.
• Serves as subject matter expert for environmental, health, safety at the regional and enterprise level.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, or another equivalent technical field.
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience at an industrial plant site working in operations leadership with proven success at developing people and teams.
• A minimum of 10 years’ experience in industrial related work experience operations and EHS.
• Comprehensive knowledge of EHSSQ programs, policies, procedures, and business plans.
• Demonstrated experience building and executing EHS strategy, including program development and systems implementation with a focus on cultural enhancement and capability building.
• Subject Matter Expertise in EHS systems and culture.
• Strong project management skills and the ability to execute large-scale initiatives in a complex, matrixed environment.
• Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to conduct data analysis, draw relevant conclusions develop recommendations and drive changes.
• Superior oral and written communication skills.
• Strong collaboration and influence skills.  Team oriented and self-motivated.
• Strong judgment and initiative on resolution of issues.
• Ability to travel up to 50%+.

Preferred Qualifications

• Successful completion of a board safety certification such as Certified Safety professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
