Position Summary The Director of the Department of Clinical Education will assist in the planning, coordination, and leadership of all aspects of the clinical education program at UNC COM. This position requires significant organizational and leadership skills as they oversee departmental operations including clinical rotation coordination, supervision of personnel, and budgetary management. Excellent interpersonal skills are also required as this individual is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of strong relationships with leadership and staff at hospital and clinic facilities, as well as physician preceptors and medical students. This position is responsible for generating and maintaining letters of intent and affiliation agreements with physician preceptors and their host agencies and works with the University of Northern Colorado central contract and legal systems to obtain these documents. The Director of the Department of Clinical Education also supports students in the acquisition of housing for those clinical rotations out of region when necessary.

Job Duties

  • Oversee daily operations of the Department of Clinical Education including office facilities, clinical coordinators, administrative staff, and scheduling logistics.
  • Develop and maintain an annual budget for the Department of Clinical Education.
  • Assist the Associate Dean of Clinical Education and GME and other Department of Clinical Education staff with the creation of a Strategic Plan for the Department.
  • Meet with internal UNC partners and external community partners as needed to outline overall objectives and plans for the Department of Clinical Education and clinical rotations.
  • Develop and maintain a master calendar with current rotation dates for all students on clinical rotations. Share these calendars with faculty, staff, and administrative leadership when requested.
  • Develop both orientation and necessary cross-training as needed for clinical coordinators.
  • Develop a robust and equitable lottery system for third-year medical students prior to the start of clinical rotations.
  • Along with the Associate Dean of Clinical Education and GME and COM leadership, recruit and orient physician preceptors.
  • Coordinate professional development training as needed for preceptor physicians and their support staff.
  • Coordinate professional development training as needed for clinical coordinators and other COM staff in the Department of Clinical Education.
  • Work with clinical coordinators to acquire student housing options when needed for clinical rotations.
  • Provide or oversee the tracking of student progress on clinical rotations, preparation of reports, as well as other assignments, ensuring the Department of Clinical Education is meeting defined metrics and accreditation standard expectations.
  • Work with the Associate Dean of Clinical Education and GME and/or Clinical Rotation Course Directors to resolve issues affecting student progression through the clinical rotation curriculum.
  • Maintain existing Affiliation Agreements and Letters of Intent between UNC COM physician preceptors and their host agencies. Establish new Affiliation Agreements and Letters of Intent when needed, working with the UNC Legal Counsel and Purchasing and Contracting Office in the process.
  • Maintain current professional knowledge and grow future competence as Clinical Education Director by participating in self-directed professional reading, staff development courses, and relevant local and national conferences when possible. Presenting relevant UNC COM clinical education data or research as approved by the Associate Dean of Clinical Education and GME at conferences or meetings is encouraged but not required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Clinical Education.
  • This position will require some regional travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal communication, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and facility for Microsoft Office Suite programs to include Word, Excel, Forms, and other relevant applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, residents, and medical students and staff from multiple disciplines.
  • Effective writing skills and competency utilizing Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong ability to solve problems in educational and administrative challenges.
  • The Director of the Department of Clinical Education will be required to possess a valid drivers license as well as current automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree.
  • Prior leadership experience as a clinical manager at an accredited US medical school or ACGME accredited residency program, or a minimum of three years experience as a clinical coordinator in clinical education at an accredited US medical school or ACGME accredited residency.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Familiarity with commonly used clinical education tracking software for medical students.
  • Experience with medical school accreditation standards (e.g., Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and/or Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)).
  • Experience in interprofessional medical education.
