Department: Fire Science

General Statement of Job

The Lab Assistant supports the instructional programs in the Fire Academy Program. Assists instructors with hands-on skills labs, cleans and maintains training equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBAs), ladders, hoses, hand tools, rescue equipment, props, and fire gear.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:
  • Performs routine and assigned activities in the Fire Academy Program.
  • Assists instructors during scheduled skills labs, live fire training support, and practical evaluations.
  • Assists in the maintenance, cleaning, inspection, and servicing of fire training equipment such as SCBAs, turnout gear, ladders, ventilation tools, hose appliances, and props.
  • Assists with inventory management, documenting equipment condition, and reporting items needing repair or replacement.
  • Helps ensure classrooms, apparatus bays, and training spaces remain clean, organized, and compliant with safety procedures.
  • Supports check-in/check-out processes for fire gear, tools, SCBAs, and College-owned vehicles; reports violations or safety concerns.
  • Monitors use of college owned equipment and simulator and reports when equipment is malfunctioning, needing repair or replacement.
  • Operates and conducts routine preventive maintenance on College vehicles; notifies appropriate personnel of any vehicle maintenance required.
  • Assists during training evolutions that require additional operational safety oversight. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
  • College Certificate, a minimum of 30 college hours required.
  • Graduate of a Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP)-approved Fire Academy preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year of fire service experience, preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
  • Fine-motor control sufficient to operate related equipment independently.
  • Knowledge of firefighting equipment, PPE, SCBAs, and rescue tools.
  • Ability to apply safety rules and emergency response protocols in skill-based environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret operating manuals, safety documentation, and instructional guides.
  • Demonstrated practice of safety precautions and rules.
  • Must be insurable under South Texas College's insurance policy for driving.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
