Summary

The Diesel Operations Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the company’s diesel service department and truck sales operations. This position oversees shop performance, service writing, technician productivity, truck inventory sales, customer relationships, and financial results. The Diesel Operations Manager directly supervises shop personnel, reviews departmental financial performance, and serves as a member of the Leadership Team, helping drive operational excellence and company growth. Approximately 70% of the role focuses on diesel service operations and shop management, with 30% dedicated to truck sales and business development.

Essential Responsibilities

Shop & Service Operations

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the diesel repair and maintenance shop. Serve as the primary Service Writer, creating work orders, documenting repairs, preparing estimates, and communicating with customers.
  • Coordinate scheduling and workflow to maximize technician productivity and shop efficiency.
  • Monitor repair quality and ensure vehicles are serviced safely, accurately, and on schedule.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships through effective communication and follow-up.
  • Oversee parts procurement, inventory management, and vendor relationships.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, safety requirements, and company policies. Monitor labor efficiency, shop utilization, and key operational performance metrics.

    Truck Sales & Business Development

  • Manage the acquisition, preparation, marketing, and sale of commercial trucks and equipment.
  • Develop relationships with owner-operators, fleets, and commercial customers.
  • Evaluate truck inventory and establish pricing strategies to maximize profitability.
  • Lead sales negotiations and ensure a positive customer purchasing experience.
  • Identify opportunities to expand truck sales and increase revenue.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, truck values, and market conditions.

    Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise diesel technicians, shop personnel, and other assigned staff.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, coach, and develop employees.
  • Conduct performance reviews and establish clear accountability standards.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, professionalism, safety, and customer service.
  • Address employee concerns and support workforce development initiatives.

    Financial Management

  • Review and manage departmental Profit & Loss statements.
  • Monitor revenue, expenses, gross profit margins, and operational costs.
  • Develop annual budgets and support forecasting efforts.
  • Analyze financial performance and implement strategies to improve profitability.
  • Track key performance indicators related to labor, parts, sales, and overall shop performance.

    Leadership Team Participation

  • Serve as a member of the Leadership Team.
  • Participate in strategic planning and business growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with company leaders to improve operational performance and customer service.
  • Support company culture, employee engagement, and long-term organizational goals.

Qualifications Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical, business, or management education preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience in diesel service, fleet maintenance, trucking operations, truck sales, or a related industry.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience required.
  • Experience managing budgets, financial reports, and operational performance preferred
