REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Developmental Preschool Teacher

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Hourly Non-Exempt

WORK CALENDAR: 180 Days

STANDARD HOURS: 29 Hours a week

Position Summary

The Developmental Preschool Assistant supports the instructional program by assisting the classroom teacher in providing a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment for preschool students ages 3-5. Working under the direction of the certified teacher, the assistant helps implement individualized instruction, promotes student independence, supports developmental growth, and assists with daily classroom routines while fostering positive relationships with students, families, and staff.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher in implementing daily instructional activities aligned with students Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Support students in developing academic, social, communication, behavioral, and self-help skills.
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group instruction as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist with classroom management and help maintain a positive, structured learning environment.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, meals, recess, and other school activities.
  • Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, diapering, feeding, dressing, and hygiene while maintaining student dignity and privacy.
  • Support behavior intervention plans and reinforce positive behavior strategies.
  • Prepare instructional materials and maintain classroom organization and cleanliness.
  • Assist with documenting student progress and collecting observational data as directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information.
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and required trainings.
  • Follow all district policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or supervising teacher.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree, completion of at least 48 college credit hours, or successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment preferred.
  • Previous experience working with preschool-aged children and/or children with disabilities preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development and early childhood practices preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrated patience, flexibility, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, transfer, and assist students as needed.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, squat, reach, and sit on the floor for extended periods.
  • Ability to actively supervise students indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to perform personal care tasks and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
