Work involves training and supervising staff; investigating and recommending actions relating to employee and inmate requests and complaints; inspects facilities for cleanliness and adherence to regulations and policies; assists the detention administrator in scheduling staff and inmates; and coordinates the transportation of inmates. This position must exercise independent initiative and judgement in making decisions regarding inmates and their custody, with suicidal, violent, or mentally unstable tendencies, and in dealing with attorneys, families, and other. Work involves exercising tact, firmness, and decisiveness in handling routine and emergency situations. This position is subject to hazards in law enforcement work including working inside a jail environment and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons, loud noises, and hazards such as cleaning chemicals, close quarters, and narrow passages. Work is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for adherence to regulations and procedures, accuracy of paperwork, adherence to schedules, and effective interpersonal skills and decision-making in dealing with inmates and staff. Examples of Duties Supervises and participates in inmate intake, release, records, meals, medications, and other inmate care activities.Supervises staff in the detention center; trains new employees in proper procedures and techniques; assign and monitor work; schedule staff and inmate activities.Investigates complaints by staff and inmates; interviews staff and inmates; recommends action and discipline.Coordinates transport of inmates to court; coordinates the release and execution of judgements regarding inmates; coordinates placement of inmates with the Department of Corrections; coordinates transportation of inmates to next location; coordinates the transportation of inmates wanted by other jurisdictions with those agencies.Coordinates communication of inmates with attorneys, relatives, bondsmen, etc.Ensures proper security of inmate funds, personal property, etc.Supervises and coordinates inmate visitation programs.Inspects detention facilities for proper cleanliness, maintenance, and security.Reviews daily incident reports completed by jail personnel; prepares computerized and manual records and reports.Authorizes inmate privileges.Prepares a variety of digital and hard copy records and reports regarding shift activities.Oversees periodic head counts and the distribution of mail, meals, clothing, food and transportation of inmates for court, medical visits and other needs.ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:Performs related work as required.Collects and reviews Officer Time SheetsCreates an Officer On-Call List for each monthKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:Considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to inmate sentencing, pre-trial conditions and release.Considerable knowledge of policies and procedures covering inmate security, classification, care, and discipline.Working knowledge of personnel policies, laws, and regulations and of modern and effective supervisory principles of motivations, communications, leadership, discipline, and performance coaching and evaluation.Knowledge of the application of information technology to the job.Skill in collaborative conflict resolution.Ability to supervise detention staff including effective training, communications, performance coaching and evaluation, and related activities.Ability to make sound decisions concerning inmate discipline.Ability to exercise sound judgement in routine and emergency situations, analyze problems and make effective decisions.Ability to work in a hazardous and confining environment.Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with inmates, law enforcement personnel, and the general public.Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with the supervisors, other employees, law enforcement and court personnel, and the General public.
