Primary Purpose of Organization Unit
The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs serves as the chief academic and operational division of the University and is responsible for leadership, oversight, coordination, review, and administration of all academic programs, academic policies, faculty affairs, strategic academic initiatives, institutional planning, and academic operations.
The Office provides leadership for the University's colleges and schools and coordinates division-wide planning, budgeting, assessment, reporting, policy implementation, institutional effectiveness, accreditation support, academic business operations, and strategic initiatives in alignment with institutional priorities and UNC System Office requirements.
The Office of the Provost also oversees academic operational support units including institutional research, planning and accreditation, sponsored research, libraries, student success and graduate education while supporting strategic academic growth, operational effectiveness, and institutional accountability.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Deputy Provost serves as the chief operational and strategic support officer for the Division of Academic Affairs and as a senior advisor and trusted partner to the Provost. The Deputy Provost supports the advancement of academic and institutional priorities by facilitating coordination, communication, implementation, and operational alignment across the units reporting to the Provost.
The Deputy Provost provides leadership for divisional strategic planning, operational management, academic business processes, policy oversight, institutional reporting, and coordination of initiatives associated with the University's Academic Strategic Plan. Acting with delegated authority on behalf of the Provost, the Deputy Provost works closely with Associate Vice Chancellors, Deans, department chairs, directors, and university leadership to ensure effective implementation of divisional priorities, operational initiatives, and institutional objectives across Academic Affairs.
The Deputy Provost serves as a primary liaison between Academic Affairs and the UNC System Office and is responsible for coordinating, reviewing, preparing, and communicating reports, operational updates, policy materials, and strategic initiatives associated with state, federal, and UNC System requirements. The position also supports institutional planning, operational assessment, accreditation activities, and policy implementation efforts within the division.
The Deputy Provost supports divisional advancement efforts through the cultivation of strategic partnerships, external funding opportunities, grants, and sponsored initiatives that advance academic priorities, faculty support, research capacity, institutional operations, and strategic growth initiatives.
The Deputy Provost plays a critical role in ensuring that the work of the Office of the Provost is coordinated, responsive, strategically aligned, and operationally effective. The position requires sound judgment, discretion, political acuity, and the ability to navigate a complex academic environment while managing multiple high-level initiatives and institutional priorities simultaneously.
The Deputy Provost serves as designee for the Provost as appropriate and provides leadership and continuity for Academic Affairs operations in the absence of the Provost.
