What You Will Do

Readiness & Training (RT) is seeking a motivated and experienced manager to provide leadership and oversee the successful development and implementation of training programs to support the nuclear operations workforce. The manager will serve as a member of the RT managerial team as the deputy group leader for the Operations and Nuclear Safety Training (RT-ONST) group. The manager will work with a variety of customers including institutional and federal leadership to provide the appropriate training, qualifications, processes, and policies for those who provide support and operations at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The candidate is expected to facilitate a full customer-service model that provides centralized coordination, management, and tracking of specific area needs to ensure the success of the training program.

The responsibilities of the Deputy Training Manager include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participates in the identification and assessment of the training needs of the organization to align training and development with organizational strategy and lab agenda
  • Implements group training programs that address specific organizational needs through job analysis, career development and consultation with managers
  • Ensures the implementation of effective and purposeful training methods that evaluate organizational performance, assess skills, performance and productivity to identify areas of training improvement.
  • Monitors organizational and instructor performance to ensure that training is meeting organizational needs and improving performance.
  • Participate in the selection and management of resources, including working with both internal employees and external vendors to develop and deliver training.
  • Provides guidance and interpretation of policies and programs concerning training.
  • Ensure the management of technologies and technical personnel required to develop, manage and deliver training.
  • Monitors the development of training materials, multimedia visual aides and other educational materials.
  • Implements and fosters best training practices through strong collaborations in education with the DOE National Training Center, TRIAD partners and local universities.
  • All other assigned duties by the Group Leader.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Training Management
  • In depth knowledge and experience in LANL's learning management system (UTrain LMS) or DOE/industry equivalent LMS.
  • In depth knowledge and experience managing training under the following;
    • DOE Order 426.2 Personal Selection, Training, Qualification and Certification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities or industry equivalent,
  • In depth knowledge and experience in using a Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) and tools used in the development and implementation of formal training programs.
  • In depth knowledge and experience with developing, monitoring, and evaluating Leadership.
  • Collaborative experience with other training organizations as part of organizational realignment associated with training-services delivery improvement and culture change.


Technical Expertise

  • Demonstrated ability in the development, organization, scheduling, and management of training and training programs.
  • Demonstrated skill in management, supervision, and human resources administration of assigned employees and subordinate supervisors or staff members.


Communications/Relationship Management

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining action to be performed on problems affecting operations management.
  • Experience in budget preparation/management.
  • Demonstrated success in effectively interfacing with all levels of stakeholders such as management, NNSA/DOE staff, vendors, and customers at all levels.


Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

426.2A Requirement: Position requires aBachelor's degree and 6 years of nuclear experience




Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience managing training under LANL's Conduct of Training policies/procedures or DOE/industry equivalent.
  • Excellent skill in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting critiques, root cause analyses, and lessons learned, and meaningful corrective action assignments.
  • In depth knowledge of LANL budget implementation and practices.
  • Active Q clearance.




Work Location:The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
