What You Will Do
M-6 is seeking a qualified R&D Manager 3 to join our team. The Explosive Applications and Special Projects Group (M-6) within the Dynamic Experiments (M) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory conducts research to study the initiation and performance of high explosives (HE) through mechanical, thermal, and electromagnetic mechanisms. Our areas of expertise include non-shock initiation of HE, HE-driven pulsed-power, special energetic materials, and special security projects in service to the Laboratory, nation, and other national security areas. We also develop and perfect the use of state-of-the-art diagnostics tools to collect and analyze data on various high-rate events. Such tools include a variety of precision sensors that measure very short-duration, high-speed changes in temperature, pressure, and position, e.g., high-speed photography, PDV, and radiography. This complex work requires a manager who supports our workers and customers through actions such as:
  • Exerts influence in the development of overall objectives and long-range goals of the organization.
  • Frequently interacts with subordinate supervisors, customers, and/or functional peer group managers, normally involving matters between functional areas.
  • Manages the activities of individual contributors in a team with accountability for strategic and tactical results in terms of safety, effectiveness, and quality.
  • Manages direct reports on a frequent and ongoing basis.
  • Follows processes and operational policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Develops and administers schedule, budget, and performance requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Technical Experience

  • Demonstrated experience working on and managing explosives operations.
  • Strong background in operational safety for moderate-hazard activities.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and record of achievement in high explosives as evidenced by technical publications, programmatic contributions, and recognition within the scientific community.

Leadership

  • Demonstrated successful project and team leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in building successful collaborations across multiple organizational boundaries.
  • Proven ability to support strategic direction and provide oversight on technical initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, mentor, and retain high-performing technical staff.

Project Management

  • Demonstrated track record of using resource management, budgeting and scheduling tools.
  • Ability to advise in the development of project management plans in accordance with line and program roles and responsibilities.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with ability to present complex technical information clearly and persuasively.
  • Interpersonal skills when working with supervisors, subordinates, peers, and internal and external customers.
  • Proven ability in partnering to meet national security deliverables and institutional goals.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships across organizational boundaries.
  • Thorough knowledge of stakeholder management and customer engagement strategies.

Education/Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
The following knowledge, skills, and experience will make the applicant more competitive:

  • Qualified to work with explosives, hazardous chemicals, and/or radiological materials;
  • LOSA graduate;
  • Experience working with LANL Facility Operations organizations such as WFO;
  • Prior management experience in LANL experimental organizations;
  • Active Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements
: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
