Position Summary

POSITION SUMMARY: The Deputy Director supports the mission and vision of the Anthony J. Rane Center for Leadership by assisting in the design, delivery, and management of leadership and character programs for student assessment development. This position will also support the centers military pathway, career development, academic, and extracurricular programs. This position will also lead projects assigned by either the Director and/or the Commandant. The Director may assign and balance responsibilities in line with institutional priorities and the Deputy's experience. This Deputy position focuses on operational, logistical, and administrative activities for the center.

The Deputy, for short, is focused on operational and support requirements for the Center for Leadership. The Deputy's role enables the success of the center's leadership, education, training, and character development programs through the execution of existing programs, the implementation of new programs, and the exploration of future programs.

MISSION: Advance leadership education, training, and character development through curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs, including approved AAS degrees. Provide civilian career information, career path exploration, and soft skills development.

DEPUTY IN RELATION TO MISSION: Provides operational, logistical, and administrative support that enables the center to fulfill its responsibility to educate, train, develop, and mentor cadets, preparing them for careers in the military, public service, and civilian careers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Cadet Development & Assessment
  • Assist in the construction and execution of the Cadet Development System to advance leadership and Character Development.
  • Assist in tracking assessment strategies and administrative support used for leadership and character development across:
  • The Cadet Assessment Program
  • The Honor & Respect Character Education Program / Cadet Development System
  • The Service-Learning Program
  • The Leadership Conference Program
  1. Honor & Respect Character Education Program
  • Provide administrative and operational support to the Cadet Honor Council and Leaders Club.
  • Coordinate scheduling and logistics for the Distinguished Guest Speaker Program.
  • Support planning and execution of small-group dilemma discussion seminars and Honor Education programming.
  1. Operational, logistical, and administrative support for the Center for Leaderships mission and activities
  • Utilize, improve, and implement systems that contribute toward the center's responsibilities and these programs.
  • Facilitate guest speaker events and other visitors.
  • Support and track expansion and modification projects related to the Anthony J. Rane Leadership Training Complex, including the leadership reaction course (LRC), military obstacle course, and rappel tower.
  • Coordinate use, maintenance, and management of the A.J. Rane Leadership Training Complex.
  • Serve as the primary mentor/coordinator for cadets enrolled in Air Force ROTC and the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class (PLC). This includes tracking cadet progress with the respective programs, academic standing, facilitating focused physical training programs, and forging strong collaborative relationships with the sponsoring entities e.g., Det 10 Air Force ROTC at University of Alabama and the Marine Corps Officer Selection Officer in Tuscaloosa, AL.
  • Focus on the backside, administrative, and support functions that allow both the Director and the career program (Aviation and Fire & EMS) managers to focus on their core responsibilities.
  • Facilitate success for MMI's Aim High Flight Academy in concert with U.S. Air Force and MMI's contractor(s).
  1. Other Duties
  • Support and coordinate with the Aviation AAS and Fire & EMS AAS Managers as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director or executive leadership.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING

  • Minimum 10 years of military experience or equivalent U.S. civil service positions, or Law Enforcement, Fire/EMS that includes experience working with the military (may be waived with substantial relevant qualifications).

  • Military ranks of E-7 through O-4

  • Or U.S. civil service grades GS6 - GS12 (FS03)

  • Or demonstrated equivalent supervisory positions in Law Enforcement, Fire, or Emergency Medical Services.

  • Bachelor's degree in higher education, student personnel administration, business administration, international relations, or other relevant social science disciplines.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, professional conduct, and supervisory experience.

  • Understand military rank structure and culture.

  • Demonstrated experience in planning and coordinating logistical, operational, and administrative support for plans, events, programs, and activities.

  • Experience managing property and inventory for availability, accountability, and maintenance.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, character, professional conduct, and performance.

  • Demonstrated experience in leadership positions.

  • Experience in operational and strategic planning and execution.

  • Possesses the temperament and skills to effectively engage with students, faculty, and staff to achieve the desired institutional outcomes.

  • Must pass a State of Alabama background check.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 20 years of military experience or service in a U.S. governmental agency, Law Enforcement, Fire/EMS, or a combination of those.
  • Master's degree in higher education, student personnel administration, business administration, international relations, or other relevant social science disciplines.
  • An understanding and appreciation for the Honor System specific to military higher education.
  • Experience in supporting the development of educational initiatives to advance student success and career opportunities within business, industry, state and federal government, and the military.
  • Experience in the assessment of leadership and character development initiatives.
  • Possess a conceptual understanding of the Full Range Leadership Model.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with career development paths, models, and career milestones.
  • Understanding assessment and evaluation processes.

Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
