Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for the City of Martinsville is seeking a qualified individual to fill the role as Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney. The Deputy reports directly to the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Job Duties

  • Carrying a full case load and prosecuting criminal cases in Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile Domestic Relations Court
  • Supervising attorneys and staff
  • Advising Law Enforcement on legal matters
  • Representing the Commonwealth on civil matters that are the responsibility of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office

Applicant Requirements
  • 4 years of licensed practicing legal experience
  • Juris Doctor from accredited Law School
  • Member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar
  • Extensive trial experience, including both bench and jury trials
  • Experience with management and administration
  • Applicants must be skilled in legal research and writing
  • The successful candidate will undergo a criminal background check and must have a valid driver's license with responsible driving history

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, communicate verbally and in writing, and use standard office and courtroom equipment. The position may require occasional travel, extended hours, and attendance at court proceedings.
