Job Summary Under direction from the Supervising City Marshal, this position serves warrants subpoenas and writs out of the Bryan Municipal Court and performs duties as bailiff during court sessions.

Essential Job Functions Serves arrest warrants subpoenas and various misdemeanor writs issued by the Municipal Court. Researches location of wanted persons utilizing various computers associated software directories law enforcement agencies and business establishments. Prior to warrant execution conducts a warrant check on each warrant to be served. Notifies defendants of active warrants and advises to pay fines/fees in order to avoid arrest. Apprehends arrests and maintains custody of offenders safely and securely transports offenders to jail, court, medical facilities, and any other designated locations. Prepares reports and processes all paperwork related to serving and clearing warrants. Collects fines and/or receives cash bonds. Serves as court bailiff and performs related duties as needed. Escorts defendants before judge in person or through video arraignment. Ensures the safety and security of the courtroom and trial participants at all times. Exercises independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain when probable cause exists to search and arrest wanted persons and when and what degree of force should be used. Operates assigned patrol vehicles. Emergency and pursuit situations require speeds in excess of posted limits and require officers to exercise due care and caution. Demonstrates competent weapons proficiency per certification standards. Must be able to load, unload, aim, and fire assigned weapon from a variety of body positions and under conditions of stress. Carries, wears, and/or transports weapons, handcuffs, uniforms, and other equipment as appropriate to the assignment and in the manner prescribed by department policy/procedures. Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications. Performs related duties as required. Responds regularly and promptly to work.

Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED plus some additional training or education in area of specialization equivalent to an Associates degree. Graduate of Texas Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Must have a minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Marshal Warrant Officer or Patrol Officer with a Texas municipal court or police department or equivalent. If applicable, discharge from military service must be under honorable conditions. Must possess good moral character, stable employment record, and no history of any conduct which may affect suitability for law enforcement work. No felony or Class A misdemeanor convictions, no Class B misdemeanor convictions within the past 10 years. If applicable, military service discharge must be under honorable conditions as stipulated on DD-214 form.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and to communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.

Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements

  • Valid Texas drivers license with a good driving record as measured by the Citys evaluation system.
  • At minimum, must possess an active basic certification as a peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  • Must currently possess Court Security Specialist Certification from TCOLE or have the ability to obtain the certification within one year from the date of hire.

  • Applicant has engaged in received deferred adjudication or pre-trial diversion for or has been convicted of conduct that constitutes a Class A Misdemeanor under the Penal Code or equivalent under federal law to include the Uniform Code of Military Justice or a Class B Misdemeanor within the past 10 years or any other conduct that may be unsuitable for employment.
  • Applicant has engaged in received deferred adjudication or pre-trial diversion for or has been convicted of DWI/WIF/WIDUI within the past 5 years.
  • Tattoos, brands, body art, dental appliances, and contact lenses that are deemed offensive, profane, or inappropriate by the department are prohibited.
  • Body modifications such as tongue-splitting, trans-dermal implantation of an object, abnormal shaping of the ears, eyes, nose, or abnormal filing of the teeth visible in an authorized uniform or attire are prohibited.
  • Tunnels large diameter ear piercing larger than ½ inch in diameter are prohibited.
  • Illicit substance use, including marijuana or any substance under Texas Health and Safety Code Penalty Group 2-A (i.e., K2 Spice, synthetic cannabinoids), is prohibited.

Physical Demands

  • Physical demands include but are not limited to sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, bending, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, using hands and fingers to operate office equipment and machines, and occasionally lifting and/or moving objects up to and including 50 pounds.
  • Work environment will be divided between the office, the field, and the courtroom.
  • Work involves working outdoors where incumbents are exposed to extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Incumbents may come in contact with abusive, hostile, and combative individuals.
  • Incumbents will occasionally be required to work evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Equipment

  • Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control authority or approval of the design, working ranges, or limitations of those items the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
