About the Position

This is a NON-STATE, TIME LIMITED position. The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is seeking a State Director of Special Education (Deputy Administrator - Tier III) for the Office of Special Education. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Plan, administer, and direct the states special education programs. • Enhance, develop, interpret, and implement special education policies and procedures. • Ensure compliance with state and federal program regulations and fiscal regulations. • Develop and administer state and federal budgets. • Developing, managing, and mentoring personnel in the Office of Special Education. • Create networks with a wide range of stakeholders, which includes local school district personnel, elected officials, advisory groups, agencies serving students with disabilities at the local, state, and national levels. • Prepare information and presentations for the State Board of Education (SBE), the Mississippi Legislature, and various commissions. • Provide public school officials with information regarding effective educational policies and procedures for serving students with disabilities. • Establish positive working relationships with school districts. • Serving as a member of the Chief Academic Officers Leadership Team. • Complete and additional duties as assigned by the State Superintendent of Education.

What youll need to be Successful

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. • Up-to-date knowledge of special education issues, emerging trends, and innovations. • Extensive knowledge of Individual with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) and how it applies to the daily education of special needs students while meeting compliance with applicable state and federal policies and procedures. • Understanding of how the state and federal legislative process applies to special education. • Knowledge of fiscal and programmatic requirements of IDEA policies and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: • Typically requires a master's degree, nine (9) years in special education experience defined below, four (4) years of which must have included line or functional administrative or advanced technical supervision. • A distinguished record of service as an education administrator. • Experience in managing and directing a complex organization and the ability to work with multiple groups, both internally and externally. • Experience with working with local leaders, special needs advocacy groups, and other groups and organizations concerned with special education. • Experience in Special Education and Special Education administration. • History of improving outcomes for students with disabilities.

Paid Personal Leave and Sick Leave

In accordance with federal law, all employees serving in the armed forces or the military reserves are entitled to 15 days per year for military training.
