Purpose

The Deli Manager is responsible for directing and coordinating all activities of the Deli Department to achieve sales, labor, customer service, food safety, inventory, and profitability goals. The Deli Manager leads department associates, oversees food preparation and merchandising operations, ensures compliance with food safety and sanitation standards, and delivers an exceptional customer experience through quality products and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development

  • Recruit, interview, train, coach, and develop Deli Department associates.
  • Schedule associates to support production, customer service, and operational needs.
  • Provide performance coaching, recognition, and corrective action when appropriate.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, inclusion, and customer service excellence.
  • Develop associates for future growth opportunities and succession planning.

Customer Service

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a customer-first culture.
  • Assist customers with product selection, catering requests, special orders, and meal solution recommendations.
  • Resolve customer concerns and service issues promptly and professionally.
  • Promote customer loyalty through superior service and product knowledge.
  • Maintain a welcoming and customer-focused department environment.

Department Operations

  • Oversee daily Deli Department operations, including food preparation, production, merchandising, inventory management, and replenishment.
  • Ensure service cases, displays, and grab-and-go areas remain fully stocked and visually appealing.
  • Monitor inventory levels and order products and supplies as needed.
  • Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and promotional execution.
  • Coordinate production schedules to meet customer demand while minimizing waste.
  • Ensure department cleanliness and operational readiness throughout the day.

Product Quality & Food Safety

  • Maintain the highest standards of food quality, freshness, and presentation.
  • Monitor food preparation, handling, storage, labeling, and rotation procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections to verify adherence to company standards.
  • Ensure associates consistently follow safe food handling practices.

Merchandising & Sales Growth

  • Execute company merchandising plans, seasonal programs, and promotional events.
  • Create attractive displays that maximize product visibility and sales.
  • Analyze department sales and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Promote featured items, meal solutions, catering offerings, and seasonal products.
  • Develop action plans to achieve sales and profitability objectives.

Financial Management

  • Manage department labor, expenses, inventory, and shrink.
  • Monitor departmental financial performance and key performance indicators.
  • Ensure efficient labor scheduling and productivity.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy and ordering effectiveness.
  • Implement strategies to improve department profitability and operational performance.

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain a safe environment for customers and associates.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and operational procedures.
  • Support shrink reduction and asset protection initiatives.
  • Ensure department equipment is operated safely and maintained properly.
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong leadership and associate development skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication abilities.
  • Knowledge of deli operations, food preparation, merchandising, inventory management, and food safety practices.
  • Understanding of sanitation standards and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Ability to analyze sales reports and operational metrics.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with retail technology, inventory systems, and ordering platforms.
