Job Summary and Qualifications

The Cytotechnologist / Cytotech is responsible for preparation and storage of all specimens and necessary documentation. Prepares stains and slides for reading by Cytotechnologist or review by the Pathologist. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Stains, mounts and studies cells of human body to detect evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities and other pathological conditions, following established standards and practices: Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings or other bodily exudates and fixes stains and slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope. 
  • Examine cell samples to detect abnormal hormone conditions. 
  • Examine cell samples to detect abnormalities in the color, shape or size of cellular components and patterns. 
  • Evaluate cells for the presence of cancer, precancerous changes or infections. 
  • Prepare and analyze samples, such as Papanicolaou (PAP) smear body fluids and fine needle aspirations (FNAs) to detect abnormal conditions. 
  • Provide patient clinical data or microscopic findings to assist pathologists in the preparation of pathology reports. 
  • Assist Pathologists or other physicians to collect cell samples such as by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies. 
  • Quality Assurance in the laboratory including the maintenance of the system in accordance with the requirements of the College of the American Pathologists and preparation for site visits. 
  • Prepare slides and reports in a timely fashion, ensuring Q.C. are met. 
  • Maintain procedures and records to meet all regulatory standards. 
  • Perform other duties as necessary for efficient operation of the department. 
  • Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care or the services delivered. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues. 
  • Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient’s care which results in patient harm. 
  • Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements. Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety. 
  • Regular, Punctual and dependable attendance. 
  • Prepare and maintain reagents and equipment. 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required 
  • Florida License Cytotechnologist required 
  • C.T. (ASCP) preferred 
  • 1 to 3 years preferred
