Under the general direction of the laboratory supervisor performs a wide variety of laboratory tests and procedures of moderate complexity (cytology and histology), as defined by CLIA `88, in a diagnostic laboratory. Makes detailed observations, performs patient sample preparation, analyzes data, and records results. Duties include examination of cytology and pathology specimens, accessioning, preparation and staining of Cytology GYN, Non-GYN, and FNA specimen, preparation and staining of Sure Path and other slides. Maintains laboratory equipment and inventory levels for laboratory supplies.
Triage and accession pathology specimens in busy laboratory. Works as a team member to maintain grossroom and receive surgical specimens throughout the day. Using a knowledge of anatomy and attention to detail, makes sure specimens match and are accessioned correctly.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Performs diagnostic cytologic, histologic and histochemical procedures.
- Uses potentially hazardous tools and equipment, blades and scalpels and hazardous chemicals in compliance with and under the guidance of Hospital policy with regards to universal precautions, chemical hygiene, infection control and laboratory safety.
- Understands and applies knowledge of cytologic specimen preparation, opening cassettes and embedding tissues;
- Performs histologic and cytologic staining techniques and sets-up staining area.
- Operates and maintains automated slide staining equipment and automated coverslipper.
- Prepares chemicals (mixes/dilutes/reconstitutes solutions, reagents, stains, etc.) in order to maintain adequate supplies of special histologic and histochemical stains. Prepares buffers and fixatives. Labels slides. Insures compliance with quality control standards as described in laboratory procedure manual for use in staining techniques pertaining to histology, cytology.
- Prepares thyroid specimen for send out molecular testing
- Ensures chemicals are disposed of according to hospital guidelines
- Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Cleans/washes/stores laboratory supplies, equipment and work area in order to ensure proper chemical safety and infection control.
- Informs supervisor when consumable supplies require replenishing.
- Provides assistance to supervisor to insure conformance to the College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation standards.
- Cleans and maintains slide staining, coverslipping and other cytology laboratory equipment
- Performs preventative maintenance and QC documentation of laboratory activities and equipment.
- Files and retrieves specimen blocks and glass slides for additional review and send out testing.
- Assists in the preparation and submission of human surgical and cytological specimen including accessioning, gross description, fixation and processing.
- Receives and processes cytology and surgical samples in order to prepare specimens for microscopic review.
- Uses computer system. Understands application of accessioning cytology and histology section of CoPath soft-ware (running log sheets, verification, entering patient demographics, etc.).
- Prepares surgical specimen for gross description
- Assist with grossing placenta specimens
- Records statistical data (e.g., number of cases, blocks, slides, stains) daily.
- Assist with Autopsy instrument preparation, cleanup and/or setup
- Maintain and set up frozen section room
- Undertakes laboratory data management (specimen log-in, filing and tracking).
- Maintains specimen accession file in compliance with regulatory agency requirements and provides test results and related information to authorized personnel verbally or in writing, as required.
- Participates in the research and development of new procedures and stains as they relate to the improvement of diagnostic testing, under the direction of the supervisor and/or group leader.
- Accessions tissue specimens for the Surgical Pathology, Cytology (patient/physician name, patient information, clinical history, condition of specimen, test requested, assigned identification number, reporting data, etc.) directly into the computer, in a careful and timely manner.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Interacts with medical staff and co-workers effectively and professionally.
- Performs clerical duties (e.g., answers telephone, files, records, in computer data base, information on cytology and/or flow cytometry specimens, test results, etc.).
- Undertakes specimen delivery and supply delivery.
- Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the department and the hospital's mission and goals.
- Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Performs other duties as needed by the Department.
- Must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
- Highschool Diploma required and at least one year required
- Associates degree plus 1 year of experience or more, preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year of experience in a pathology laboratory or related field

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information required Experience with CoPath soft-ware a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and a strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology.
- Demonstrate accuracy in preparing, staining and handling pathology specimen.
