Description

FLSA: Maintenance, non-exempt

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly environment throughout College facilities. The position performs a variety of custodial, housekeeping, and facility support duties, including cleaning classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and other campus facilities. The Custodian supports daily operations by maintaining building cleanliness, assisting with event setup and breakdown, and helping ensure College facilities present a professional appearance for students, employees, and visitors.

The Custodian receives general supervision from the Supervisor, Custodial Operations and/or Executive Director, Business and Administrative Services.

Examples of Duties

Facility Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, common areas, restrooms, and other assigned facilities.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, strip, wax, buff, and maintain various floor surfaces using appropriate equipment and cleaning products.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, drinking fountains, fixtures, and other high-touch surfaces.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and properly dispose of waste materials.
  • Dust, clean, and polish furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Clean whiteboards, windows, walls, doors, and other building surfaces.
  • Replenish restroom and facility supplies, including soap, paper products, and sanitizing materials.
  • Identify and report maintenance, safety, or security concerns to appropriate personnel.

Facility Support

  • Open and secure campus buildings as assigned.
  • Assist with room setups, furniture moves, and event support activities.
  • Prepare classrooms, meeting rooms, and event spaces for College functions.
  • Work collaboratively with other custodial staff to complete special cleaning projects and facility maintenance activities.
  • Operate custodial equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner.

Other Duties

  • Maintain compliance with established safety procedures and proper chemical handling requirements.
  • Support emergency response, weather-related operations, and facility recovery activities as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of custodial, housekeeping, facilities, or related experience.
  • Valid drivers license.

  • Custodial and housekeeping methods, materials, and practices.
  • Safe operation of custodial equipment and machinery.
  • Proper handling, storage, and use of cleaning chemicals and supplies.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily indoors with occasional outdoor responsibilities. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Regular lifting and moving of furniture, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds may be required, with occasional heavier lifting performed with assistance.

The position routinely works with cleaning chemicals, custodial equipment, ladders, and powered floor maintenance equipment. Exposure to dust, cleaning products, noise, and varying environmental conditions may occur. Day, evening, weekend, holiday, emergency, and special event work may be required based on operational needs.
