Responsibilities

  • Perform general custodial duties: sweep, mop, vacuum, wax and polish VCT floors with floor machines; dust and clean furniture, walls, rails, windows, sills, and blinds; empty waste baskets, remove refuse and trash up to 25 pounds from building; clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms; move furniture as needed to accomplish assigned duties. Performs general cleaning and ground maintenance around buildings, parking areas, drives, and other campus areas; operate mowers, edgers, fertilizer spreaders, spray rig, tractor, and weed trimmer as necessary to maintain law areas; plants trees, maintain roadways, parking areas, and fencing.
  • Provides event set-up and tear-down support for students, staff, faculty, and campus events both inside and outside buildings; work closely with facility use coordinator to ensure that all events are set-up correctly and that deadlines are met; assist with cleaning and regular maintenance of sinks, counters and appliances in the prep kitchen. Performs routine maintenance of all groundskeeping equipment, mowers, tractors, edgers, other lawn equipment, and tools.
  • Respond to emergency clean-ups as needed; assist with Facilities, Operations, and Maintenance Department functions and activities as needed. Performs general exterior maintenance and cleaning of buildings and grounds including doorways and entrances, sidewalks cleaning and pressure washing, other duties as required by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Completion of ninth grade.
  • A valid State of Florida or Georgia Driver's License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing event setup and breakdown, including arranging tables, chairs, staging, and equipment according to layouts or diagrams.
  • Ability to operate floor care equipment, including high-speed buffers.
  • Knowledge of proper floor care techniques (stripping, waxing, buffing, burnishing, and chemical use).
  • Familiarity with custodial practices, including cleaning standards for classrooms, offices, restrooms, and event spaces.
  • Ability to interpret room setup diagrams, work orders, or verbal instructions accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure event spaces are properly configured and presentation-ready.
  • Ability to safely lift, move, and arrange furniture and equipment (tables, chairs, risers, etc.).
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, especially under time-sensitive event schedules.

Helpful

During the first three months, the Custodial Worker will receive structured, hands-on training to build familiarity with campus systems, tools, and safety procedures. The selected candidate will work closely with their supervisor and department head to:

  • Participate in guided training sessions on university equipment, facilities, and standard operating procedures.
  • Shadow experienced staff to learn daily workflows and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Gain an understanding of department safety protocols and compliance requirements.
  • Take on progressively more independent assignments with ongoing support and feedback.
  • Establish strong working relationships with team members and campus partners.

By the end of the first 90 days, the Custodial Worker is expected to be confident in navigating campus facilities, performing routine maintenance tasks, and contributing independently to the departments work while continuing to develop advanced skills.
