JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Traffic Signal Supervisor, performs journey level work in the installation, repair and preventative maintenance of electrical and electronically controlled traffic signal control equipment, traffic video and detection equipment; operates a bucket truck, and supervises assigned assistants; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces and performs preventive maintenance all components of traffic signal systems including span poles, mast arms, span wires, guy wires, assemble traffic signal heads; wire signal heads; wire detectors; install conduit, cable closures, and maintain records of repairs and timing changes.
  • Install controller cabinets and wire all the components in the cabinet including controller timers, conflict monitors, detector amplifiers, video and wireless detection cables, communication modems, interconnect cable termination panels.
  • Troubleshoots in the field and restores operation of traffic control devices that have undergone failures due to electrical, electronic or cable failure due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction crews.
  • Modifies the timings and operation features of traffic signal controller timers in the cabinet.
  • Installs wireless and/or video detection equipment.
  • Verify and troubleshoot the connectivity of the existing twisted pair copper interconnect cable.
  • Operates a variety of circuit testing and related tools and equipment to perform electrical repairs.
  • Interpret intersection and traffic signal plans and drawings.
  • Locates and marks the underground traffic signal infrastructure for contractors and utility companies using electronic conduit locator.
  • Reviews and inspects the work of contractors and utility companies.
  • Maintains inventory of materials, tools, and equipment used.
  • Responds to reported equipment malfunctions, complaints, and emergencies as needed.
  • Interprets work using electronic schematics, wiring diagrams, and underground street intersection prints.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES

  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic circuitry including solid-state components.
  • Knowledge of inter-connect cable and cable closure wiring installation and/or installation.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal components.
  • Good knowledge of the safety practices associated with electrical and electronic circuitry.
  • Knowledge of pertinent provisions within the Uniform Electrical Code and other regulations.
  • Working knowledge of supporting cables and fixtures used in overhead wiring.
  • Ability to perceive the full range of the color spectrum, such as working with color-coded electronic components or multi-conductor cables.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effective both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to work independently with the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to use hand tools and test equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical labor that involves frequent bending, pulling, pushing, lifting and carrying of up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 35 feet, such as standing in a raised bucket to repair, remove or replace traffic signal, wireless or video equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of adverse conditions, such as heavy nearby traffic and inclement weather with exposure to the elements, including heat, rain, wind or cold.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited high school and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and installation of electronic equipment or any equivalent combination of education, training and experiences as described above.

NOTE: Post-high school education in the electronic, electrical and/or electro-mechanical fields may substitute for work experience on a yearly basis up to a maximum of two (2) years, of which one (1) year must have been in the traffic signal repair or installation field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At time of appointment, must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Within six (6) months of appointment, possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Obtain and maintain IMSA Level 1 Signal Certification within one (1) year of appointment. Obtain and maintain IMSA Level 2 Signal Certification within two (2) years of appointment.
