Job Responsibilities

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, Behavioral Science Unit is seeking an instructor to research, develop, and deliver law enforcement training for basic and advanced officers, investigators, and other assigned groups.

Duties include:

  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and instruct training programs. Serves as a primary instructor for Basic Instructor Development (BID) and Specific Skills Instructor (SSI). Serves as a backup instructor for Field Training Officer Management (FTO), Human Trafficking, and CDV Investigations.

  • Review and grade pre-qualification requirements and post-course summaries; support Academy instructors with best practices in curriculum development.

  • Instruct report writing and courtroom procedures, and fair and impartial policing. Conduct and evaluate practical problem-based scenarios using firearms training simulations and Crisis House simulations, nighttime response, and range safety officer.

  • Develop and deliver new training programs based on emerging trends and best practices to enhance public safety.

  • Ensure compliance with Academy standards, testing requirements, and student discipline policies.

  • Perform assigned law enforcement duties, including ride-alongs and assisting partner agencies as needed.

  • Communicate effectively with staff, students, and partner agencies to support instructional and operational goals.

Salary:

  • The hiring salary is commensurate with full-time LEO instructional experience: $60,696-$66,000.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • High school diploma and eight (8) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Associate degree and six (6) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of law enforcement experience and
  • Experience must include two (2) years of road experience and
  • Currently certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) or
  • Currently certified LEO in another *jurisdiction with full powers of arrest with the ability to become an S.C. LEO within one year of hire.

Additional requirements:

  • Must be available for occasional field training or assisting other agencies requiring after-hours, overnight, and/or weekend duty.

Preferred Qualifications

We prefer that you currently possess the following:

  • Experience teaching, developing lesson plans, and creating law enforcement training materials and curriculum.
  • Basic Instructor Development (BID) certification.
  • CDL or ability to get one
  • Training Certification in Active Shooter Response
  • Simunition Instructor experience
