Job Responsibilities

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy), Detention Unit, is currently seeking a training director to manage and supervise the unit.

Duties:

  • Manages the delivery of all training within the Basic Detention Program, including the complete curriculum and all advanced-level classes, and provides instructional support in all areas of responsibility.

  • Serves as a member of the cadre for basic detention training and serves as the liaison between detention and basic training. Provides consistent leadership in physical training and class formation activities; supervises and controls all detention activities; ensures all detention classes comply with Academy policies and procedures, as well as requirements outlined in the Student Rules and Regulations Manual; and conducts graduation rehearsals and graduation ceremonies.

  • Manages the preparation, revision, and updating of student training materials and instructional aids. Maintains the currency and accuracy of existing programs through research and development in assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Fosters teamwork and builds professional, collaborative relationships with subordinates, Academy staff, and stakeholders. Assists other units within the Criminal Justice Academy with training programs and related activities, as needed.

  • Develops and implements curriculum validation processes, including, but not limited to, job task analyses and advanced training needs assessments.

  • Participates in ride-alongs and assists other law enforcement agencies during natural or man-made disasters and with other operational needs as required. Conducts law enforcement duties and other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Currently certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) and
  • Four (4) years of L.E. instruction and/or program development and
  • Three (3) years of L.E. supervisory experience and
  • Masters *degree and four (4) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Bachelor's *degree and six (6) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Associates *degree and eight (8) years of law enforcement experience or
  • High School Diploma or GED and ten (10) years of law enforcement experience.

(*)The degree must be in criminal justice, education, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess Basic Instructor Development (BID) or Specific Skill Instructor (SSI) certification
  • Possess Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification or obtain it within six (6) months of employment.

Additional Comments

About You:

  • Must maintain good physical condition to properly conduct defensive tactics instruction.
  • Must perform cadre duties for the detention unit.
  • Considerable knowledge of contemporary law enforcement principles, practices, techniques, tactics, and methods.
  • Skilled at researching and developing comprehensive lesson plans.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively.
  • Analyze problems and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Coordinate the work of subordinates.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, students, and agency stakeholders.
  • Available for occasional evening, weekend, and holiday instruction.
  • Maintain class 1 LEO certification and other certifications, as needed.
