Description of Job

GENERAL SUMMARY

This position reports directly to the Chair of Criminal Justice within the Center for Career & Technical Education and works collaboratively with other discipline faculty. The Dean for the Social and Behavioral Science & Public Safety and Legal Services Pathway serves as this position's second-level supervisor.

The primary purpose of the Assistant Professor for Criminal Justice is to deliver high-quality instruction across Criminal Justice courses while maintaining academic rigor, equity, and workforce relevance. In addition to teaching, the position actively participates in college and departmental service, including curriculum development, assessment, advising, and shared governance. Central to this role is a strong commitment to student success, retention, and completion through inclusive, student-centered pedagogy and meaningful engagement with a diverse community college population.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Teaching/Instruction

• Primary teaching duties will be in introductory and intermediate Criminal Justice courses.
• A full course load is defined as 15 credit hours per semester, with alternative assignments for administrative and related duties possible.
• Faculty must command strong teaching skills and be able to engage students using traditional, nontraditional, and innovative methods of instruction, including the use of technology, while teaching in a curriculum grounded in core values of career and technical education, critical thinking, respect, competence, professional development, and ethical responsibility.
• A commitment to student academic success that goes beyond the classroom is essential, as are effective interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.

Service

• In addition to teaching, faculty in this position will work collaboratively with other Criminal Justice faculty to develop and modify curriculum and engage in other departmental initiatives and responsibilities, including efforts to maintain departmental coherence across CCD's many instructional venues (e.g., online, community campuses, and pre-collegiate programs), textbook selection, and professional development of adjunct instructors.
• Other duties may include advising students on programs and degree planning, and evaluating Criminal Justice assessment and placement artifacts.
• All full-time faculty are also expected to provide service to the college.
• After gaining more experience, full-time faculty may be expected to share in broader department coordination duties on a collaborative basis. These administrative duties may include course scheduling and staffing, assessment, budgeting, hiring and supervising of adjunct instructors, resolving and mediating instructor/student disputes, mentoring adjunct instructors, or taking on administrative roles assigned by the Department Chair.

It is the expectation of the college that faculty will continue to be active scholars in their chosen field. They should continue to pursue their academic growth by taking formal academic courses or by attending conferences and workshops and otherwise reading, exploring and enriching their knowledge of the developments in the field of Criminal Justice.

Faculty should also be a leader in the community. Faculty often serve as liaisons on local boards or commissions, often providing valuable leadership to the community as a whole.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CRJ: Criminal Justice: General

Criminal justice courses are Career and Technical Education courses. Faculty and instructors must have a CCD CTE credential to teach in the field. The following are the minimum requirements to teach:

CRJ: CRJ 1010, CRJ 1012, CRJ 1025, CRJ 1027, CRJ 1035, CRJ 1045, CRJ 1046, CRJ 1052, CRJ 2001, CRJ 2005, CRJ 2009, CRJ 2010, CRJ 2025, CRJ 2030, CRJ 2031, CRJ 2036, CRJ 2045, CRJ 2057, CRJ 2075, CRJ 2080, PSM 1004, PSM 1005, PSM 1010, PSM 1032, PSM 1033, PSM 2004, PSM 2021, PSM 2022.

Required Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice/Criminology.
• Tested Professional Experience: Individuals may meet the tested professional experience by demonstrating significant work and currency in the following criminal justice fields CIA, FBI, DOJ, parole, probation, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, military police, homeland security, national security, teaching incarcerated youth, or CSI.
• Tested professional experience can be demonstrated by professional expertise developed through a body of work in writing, curriculum development, training, research, professional presentations, professional publications, or job experience.
• Applicants who have been continuously teaching in the field since they left the work within the discipline or graduated with A bachelor's degree or higher are held to be current in the field.
• Experience working with secondary and postsecondary students.
• Minimum of 10,000 hours of verified occupational experience in a qualifying criminal justice field
• A criminal justice career is defined as CIA, FBI, DOJ, parole, probation, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, military police, homeland security, national security, teaching incarcerated youth, or CSI. Experience older than 7 seven years will be considered when the individual can demonstrate relevancy in the field.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.).
• Ability to use a variety of web conferencing platforms (e.g. Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.).
• Knowledge and/or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations.
• Knowledge and/or experience with the use of instructional technology, including classroom application and distance learning.
• Instructional innovation experience.
• Evidence of incorporating technology into classroom instruction.
• Experience/familiarity with assessment of student learning, instructional effectiveness, and/or adult learning.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people.
• Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Marketing and recruitment ability.
