JOB SUMMARY

Reporting directly to a Sergeant or Lieutenant, responsible for supervising inmates and providing care, safety, and security while maintaining rules, regulations, and cleanliness of the Williamson County Jail. Works in one of three general post assignments: Booking, Pod, Medical, or Floor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  • Maintains safety and security in the Jail
  • Receives, books, and secures inmates upon arrival
  • Oversees and maintains area of assigned responsibility
  • Conducts daily physical inspections and searches of the facilities, inmates, and visitors
  • Supervises inmates activities (i.e. recreation, visitation, meals, etc.)
  • Posts, maintains, and enforces jail rules as well as state, federal, and departmental policies and procedures
  • Observes inmates to detect, deter, and/or prevent self-destructive or criminal behaviors
  • Assists with transport of inmates
  • Performs special duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position involves physically subduing and restraining aggressive inmates
  • Position involves constantly standing and walking on concrete floors while making rounds
  • Position involves dragging a minimum of 165 pounds (training/recruitment mannequin) in a manner consistent with rescue and restraint maneuvers
  • Position involves to hearing audible sounds and speaking in a clear understandable voice
  • Position may involve working day and/or overnight shifts

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • Maximum security facility behind locked doors
  • Exposure to individuals accused or convicted of crimes, individuals with risk of illness, and potential biohazards
  • May be required to perform some work outdoors in inclement weather (heat, cold, wet conditions)

IRREGULAR HOURS

  • Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday Friday) may be required
  • May be deemed essential personnel in the event of an emergency
  • Regular attendance is required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • All: High School diploma or equivalent
  • All: Must be at least 18 years of age per Rule 217.1 of the Texas Administrative Code
  • See required licenses and certifications below

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required within thirty (30) days of employment

  • All: Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) training
  • All: Valid Texas drivers license

Required within twelve (12) months of employment

  • All: Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Jailer certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • All: One (1) year of experience working in a correctional facility securing, searching, and monitoring inmates
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
