Job Description:

The Broward Sheriffs Office is now offering a hiring incentive for the Certified Deputy Sheriff position. Candidates who successfully complete the selection process and are hired by the agency will receive a one-time payment of $5,000.00 at the beginning of their service with the Department of Detention. This initiative will be discontinued once allocated funds are no longer available.

Testing and Selection Process:

The Broward Sheriffs Office is now offering condensed testing for ALL Certified Deputy Sheriff applicants. Human Resources will schedule and coordinate the selection process within a one-week period to expedite the applicant process. Applicants are responsible for all travel expenses. If you are NOT interested in the condensed testing, please contact Human Resources directly at 954-321-4400 to opt out of the one-week testing and we will accommodate your schedule requirements accordingly.

Minimum Requirements:

  • An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required
  • Must possess a valid Basic Recruit Certificate for Corrections from the State of Florida Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Training
  • Basic Recruit Certificate must be submitted with the online application
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony
  • All candidates must not have been convicted of any perjury or a false statement charge as an adult
  • All other arrests and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
  • Must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation (F.S.S. 943.13)

  • The MODIFIED AGILITY will be accepted for candidates who meet ALL of the following criteria:
  • Applicant must be currently certified and working in the position of a sworn Detention Deputy/Corrections Officer
  • The applicant must have attended a comparable corrections academy either in the state of Florida or any other state
  • The applicant must have verifiable proof of taking a Physical Agility Test that is measurable and comparable with the current Physical Agility Test administered by the Broward College Institute of Public Safety
  • Copy of previous Physical Agility test results and the Modified Agility Test results must be attached to the applicant
  • If claiming Veterans Preference, candidates must provide a DD214 Member 4 or Service form to the online application
  • Must possess and maintain throughout employment, a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance
  • Driver license must show current address
  • All candidates must submit with the application, a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history
  • Florida driving histories can be obtained at any courthouse in Broward County
  • Three-year (3), Seven-year (7), and online Florida driving history records will not be accepted
  • If you have possessed a drivers license in any other state in the past 10 years you will need to submit an "entire" driving history from that state
  • For non-Florida driving histories, please contact that states division of motor vehicles
  • The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application for employment is received by the Bureau of Human Resources

Nature of Work:

CERTIFIED DETENTION DEPUTY work includes the supervision and control of detainees; enforcement of security rules, regulations and procedures; and, the provision of services and information to detainees. Tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and that may involve the bending pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects, such as in the event of chasing and subduing a detainee resisting control.
