Job Summary
Responsible for providing legal advice and recommendations to human resources and management within a variety of business units regarding matters of various complexities (basic to intermediate) which have or may have a sizable dollar impact on business activities and operations. Specifically, our Employment Benefits and Compensation, Corporate Counsel role will provide practical and business-oriented legal advice and counselling on a wide range of employee benefits and compensation issues. The ideal candidate will have at least 3-years of prior employment benefits law/compensation experience, in private practice and/or as in-house counsel for companies with multistate reach. Specific areas of impact may include:
- Responsible for legal matters related to qualified and non-qualified retirement plans, health and welfare plans, incentive plans and other benefit programs for the Walgreens and certain affiliates, including union plans and programs
- Provide legal counsel for governing committees for retirement and welfare plans
- Provide counsel on HR/benefit issues for mergers and acquisitions
- Draft and support negotiations for benefit plan/program vendor agreements
- Provide legal guidance for ERISA compliance matters (claims and appeals, reporting and disclosure, etc.)
- Draft and review compensation and benefit plan and program documents, disclosures and employee communications
- Provide business-orientated legal advice and counseling on paid sick and safe leave requirements, leaves of absence, compensation, and benefits
Job Responsibilities
- Handles routine legal matters which generally focus on applying knowledge of one or more legal specialties
- Typically receives specific direction from management or more senior law professionals as to the outcomes, process and schedules expected while developing a deeper knowledge of the business operations of the company
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams to execute legal strategy
- Assists on cases, matters and projects, performs and supervises research, reviews standard documents and routine contracts, and prepares routine filings.
- Develops and implements internal legal policies and best practices to enhance operational efficiency
- Works to develop fluency in legal concepts impacting the work performed

Basic Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and at least three (3) years of post-bar attorney legal work experience in a combination of law firm
- Required licensure to practice law in at least one state
- Required Illinois bar membership or active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Experience with time management skills such as prioritizing/organizing and tracking details and meeting deadlines of multiple projects with varying completion dates
- Experience collaborating across business lines to develop and/or execute departmental strategies
- At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
- At least 2 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross- functional team leadership.
- Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state)
