Department University Life

Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is an auxiliary organization within the University Life unit of George Mason University. HRL employs over 170 full-time and graduate staff members and over 200 undergraduate student staff members. HRL oversees student housing areas comprised of roughly 6000 beds within over forty residential facilities as well as housing the distributed campuses including the Science & Technology Campus and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. About the Position

The Coordinator of Residence Life for Residential Academic Engagement assists with the implementation and assessment of all residential learning communities and serves as a liaison for faculty and staff who work with the individual residential learning communities. The Coordinator of Residence Life for Residential Academic Engagement is responsible for collaborating with academic partners to identify the needs of each Residential Learning Community (RLC) at Mason and provides strategic guidance and support for RLC stakeholders in the execution and assessment of the RLC programs. In addition, the Coordinator of Residence Life for Residential Academic Engagement develops and implements a marketing strategy, recruitment, and assignments for the RLCs.

Responsibilities

### Residential Academic Engagement Initiatives

  • Assists with the development and implementation of all Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) to improve and support student retention and success.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of the residential curriculum in collaboration with the Residential Student Engagement team and other Residence Life staff to support student engagement and community building.
  • Manages the residential tutoring program, including recruitment, hiring, training, and supervising the residential tutors, to facilitate student learning opportunities.
  • Oversees the use of early intervention tools and retention efforts to increase residential student retention.
  • Develops and supports initiatives that recognize student academic success and support student academic success skills.
  • Supervises and evaluates, as needed, departmental graduate staff or interns for the Residential Academic Engagement initiatives area to ensure their tasks are completed successfully and support their development.
  • Manages and completes supply purchasing for activities in the residential learning communities to ensure successful implementation and student engagement.
  • Supports the logistical setup and breakdown of Residential Academic Engagement events by regularly transporting folding tables, boxes, pallets of soda, snacks, and other program supplies to ensure smooth execution of key initiatives that foster academic and community engagement within residential spaces.

### Residential Learning Community Marketing Occupancy and Assessment

  • Implements marketing and recruitment efforts, including creation and management of both print and electronic materials, to increase awareness and interest in residential learning communities.
  • Manages regular communication with RLC stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration between teams.
  • Works in collaboration with Residential Services and other university offices to recruit new RLC students, including coordination of and attendance at Preview Days and other admissions events.
  • Collects and tracks Residential Learning Community programming using a program tracker to assess goal achievements.
  • Assists the supervisor in RLC linked courses planning and course collection for the Registrar to ensure RLC students are enrolled properly.
  • Assists the supervisor to evaluate and guide RLC partners on maintaining annual budgets, ensuring proper spending and allocation of resources.
  • Creates and supports methods to assess the achievement of residential learning community outcomes and student satisfaction to support student retention, success, and satisfaction.
  • Assists in the implementation and evaluation of all department and university-wide assessment strategies to support broad efforts to measure effectiveness.

### Partnerships and Collaborations

  • Collaborates with Residential Learning Community partners and stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, deans, and directors, to implement RLC initiatives that promote student engagement, support student academic success, and strengthen the campus community.
  • Meets monthly with RLC partners and Residence Life staff to discuss administrative updates and foster collaboration.
  • Provides guidance and support to RLC partners in creating strategies and programming to meet the RLC and curriculum learning outcomes.
  • Supports Community Directors in programming, curriculum implementation, RLC student staff support, and orientation to ensure RLC goals are achieved.
  • Supports the RLC student staff programming by ensuring RLC student staff and RLC partners are conducting regular meetings, as well as training and development, to ensure successful collaboration and timely planning of program initiatives.
  • Assists the supervisor in creating new partnerships to support academic student success, including with Student Success Coaching and other University Life offices.

### Unit and Division Support

  • Serves as a live-in staff member and participates in an on-call rotation to respond promptly to residence hall incidents and support student safety as part of the residence life duty response team.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support operations of RLC programs and Housing and Residence Life (HRL).
  • Assists in fulfilling duties of vacant positions within the department as relevant and needed to ensure continuity of essential department operations.
  • Attends regularly scheduled departmental meetings to stay informed on departmental division and university needs and actions.
  • Actively supports and complies with all University policies, HRL regulations, departmental vision, and goals to promote a safe and healthy environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Progressive experience typically obtained in two years in residence life, student affairs, or housing operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and current trends in residence life and student housing.
  • Demonstrated skills in effectively communicating and collaborating with various campus partners and audiences.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously and with evolving priorities and.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Full-time or graduate assistant experience in higher education at a four-year institution.
  • Experience with Learning Communities that contribute to student engagement and retention.
  • Experience implementing successful social media and marketing campaigns in conjunction with programming and office identity web-presence.
