Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, the Core Laboratory Technical Coordinator oversees the technical operations of the department. The Coordinator is responsible for reviewing and revising the policies and procedures in the laboratory to ensure compliance with CAP, JCAHO, and CLIA Standards. He/she provides technical assistance and training of Laboratory personnel, assigns maintenance duties and proficiency testing duties. He/she ensures validity and accuracy of test results by review of result logs, QC, PI, and worksheets where applicable. He/she will be required to work the technical functions of the work bench on a routine basis. He/she is familiar with the various services available in the hospital and the interactions with the Laboratory. The Technical Coordinator will continually strive to improve training skills and technical skills and knowledge through formal and informal education.
Position Requirements:
A. Licensure/Certification/Registration:
MT or MLT ASCP, CLS or CLT NCA, or MT AMT preferred.
B. Education:
Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field (Chemistry, Biology, etc.), and a one year internship preferred.
C. Experience:
Four years minimum experience as a Technologist in assigned area required.
D. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
1. Works as a Medical Technologist by integrating current scientific knowledge with technical competency which relate to the Laboratory Department.
a. He/she demonstrates knowledge and responsibility, and participates in the implementation of all aspects of the Safety/Chemical Hygiene Plan, Infectious/Exposure Control Plan, Electrical Safety, Disaster, Plan, and Code Blue Plan, fire Plan, Computer Systems, Compliance, Ethics, and General Laboratory.
b. She/he shall be able to perform venipunctures and capillary collection for specimen procurement with the knowledge of age-related techniques, physical structure, and amounts of blood to be obtained.
c. She/he shall be current technically and theoretically knowledgeable of instruments and test in medical technology.
d. Demonstrates knowledge and responsibility for the ongoing performance improvement.
2. The Technical Coordinator:
a. Provides technical instruction and training of personnel and/or students in techniques, instrumentation, and organization of work.
b. May recommend selection, transfer, and organization of work.
c. Works with the laboratory director to ensure that policies and procedures are effectively followed.
d. Strictly monitors performance improvement opportunities and quality control procedures within the parameters/goals set by Medical and Laboratory Director and accrediting agencies.
e. Ensures that all tests are performed in accordance with the standards established and published in department procedure books.
f. Ensures that results are valid and accurate prior to release.
g. Establishes implements and monitors specimen accession, identification, and retention systems, meeting process management and external policies and regulations.
h. Evaluates current procedures and maintains a procedural manual in accordance with CAP and other accrediting agency guidelines; reviews and revises as needed - minimum is yearly.
i. Establishes and maintains a preventative maintenance program for all instruments, and a log system for recording all actions.
j. Ensures equipment and instruments are in good operating condition, recognizes malfunction, takes corrective action, and reports to Laboratory Director.
k. Maintains appropriate level of supplies and reagents.
l. Enforces safety practices and corrects hazards that exist.
m. Recommends capital equipment needs and replacements to Laboratory Director.
n. Interacts in positive and professional manner with physicians and/or nurses on Laboratory results, timing and availability of test results or procedures.
o. Keeps Laboratory and Medical Directors informed of proposed changes in techniques, procedures, protocols and all problems and/or potential problems.
p. Participates in continuing education in laboratory medicine, management, and training skills.
q. In-services personnel when appropriate or when a recognized need exists.
r. Performs other related work as assigned by Laboratory Director.
s. Is expected to be aware and read current professional literature relating to Laboratory specialty.
t. Participates in continuing education program on site.
u. May have 24-hour responsibilities.
v. May perform duties in other departments other than the specifically assigned department when necessary to assure essential service to physicians and patients.
w. Enforces Laboratory and Hospital policies.
x. Must set an example for employees to follow.
y. Assists in a variety of job-related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director.
