Under minimal supervision, performs complex setups and operates conventional machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.
- Interprets blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and setup requirements.
- Measures, marks, and references workpieces to guide machining processes.
- Selects, aligns, and secures fixtures, tools, and materials on various machines such as mills, lathes, and grinders.
- Calculates and sets machine controls for optimal machining parameters or operates computerized controls.
- Monitors machine operation, detects malfunctions, and makes necessary adjustments.
- Verifies finished parts for conformance to specifications.
- Collaborates with engineers and production staff to resolve machining issues.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and efficient work environment, ensuring machine tools are properly maintained.
Qualifications include prior experience in conventional machine shop processes, tool sharpening skills, and the ability to interpret drawings and perform first article inspections. A high school diploma or GED with 5+ years of relevant experience machining detailed parts from exotic materials is required. Skills in basic math, trigonometry, and control-based programming are essential. Physical demands include vision acuity, manual dexterity, and occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. The work is performed primarily in a manufacturing environment with moderate noise and exposure to fumes or chemicals, with proper safety equipment provided.
