Kforce has a client in Mount Vernon, VA that is seeking a Controller. Summary: The Controller is a hands-on financial leader responsible for ensuring the organization's day-to-day financial operations run smoothly, efficiently, and in support of the mission. This role emphasizes business acumen, sound judgment, and operational execution, partnering closely with leadership to translate financial data into actionable insights. The Controller oversees core accounting and finance activities while focusing on sustainability, scalability, and practical decision-making across the organization. Key Responsibilities:
  • Own the day-to-day financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll coordination, cash management, and month-end close
  • Ensure financial processes are efficient, well-documented, and scalable as the organization grows
  • Maintain accurate and timely financial records to support management reporting and operational decisions
  • Lead annual budgeting and reforecasting processes in collaboration with program and department leaders
  • Monitor actuals versus budget and proactively identify trends, risks, and opportunities
  • Provide clear, practical financial guidance to non-financial stakeholders to support operational planning
  • Serve as a trusted thought partner to executive leadership on financial health, cost management, and resource allocation
  • Support program leaders with financial insights tied to program performance and outcomes
  • Promote a culture of financial accountability while remaining pragmatic and solutions-oriented
  • Establish and maintain internal controls that are right-sized for a nonprofit environment
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve reporting clarity, and reduce manual effort

Requirements:

  • Nonprofit experience
  • Business mindset and practical operations vs GAAP Accounting
  • Strong communication skills
  • To be considered for this position, candidates must have experience in a similar role, or they must possess significant knowledge, experience, and abilities to successfully perform the responsibilities listed
  • Relevant education and/or training will be considered a plus

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
