Overview:

About the Company

We are a growing small construction company specializing in U.S. Federal Government construction projects. With headquarters in Honolulu, Hawaii and active operations in Washington State, we deliver high-quality construction services while maintaining strict compliance with federal regulations and financial reporting requirements.

 

Position Summary

The Controller will serve as the construction accounting professional for the Company and will be responsible for all aspects of financial management, accounting, reporting, and compliance. This individual will work in a fast-paced, evolving environment and will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer, project management teams, joint venture partners, and outside auditors and tax team.

The ideal candidate will bring strong construction accounting experience, exceptional cash management skills, deep familiarity with federal contracting requirements, and the ability to support multiple operations while managing financial risk.

 

Salary Range

Between $120K/year - $130K/year

Responsibilities:

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Manage all day-to-day accounting operations including:
    • Accounts payable and accounts receivable processing
    • General ledger maintenance
    • Monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
  • Oversee overhead cost allocation and ensure accurate project financials
  • Perform bank reconciliations and cash flow forecasting
  • Prepare revenue projections and financial forecasts for management
  • File periodic sales tax reports with applicable state and local agencies

 

Job Costing, WIP & Contract Support

  • Maintain accurate job costing records for all projects
  • Prepare Work in Process (WIP) schedules and project profitability reports
  • Support project teams with financial aspects of construction contracts
  • Maintain familiarity with contract terms, billings, retainage, and compliance requirements

Payroll & Compliance

  • Process weekly payroll, including certified payroll reporting
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Davis-Bacon Act wage requirements
    • Federal certified payroll submissions
    • State and federal payroll tax filings

Joint Venture Accounting

  • Manage accounting related to joint ventures, including:
    • Consolidation or equity method accounting
    • Coordination with joint venture partner accounting departments
    • Financial reporting and reconciliations

Cash Management & Financial Relationships

  • Monitor cash flow and ensure effective use of company resources
  • Manage collections, vendor payments, and short-term cash planning
  • Prepare and submit required financial reports to banks and sureties
  • Negotiate and establish lines of credit with banking partners
  • Ensure compliance with financial covenants

Audit & Tax Support

  • Coordinate with third-party CPA firms for:
    • Annual audits and/or reviews
    • Tax preparation and filings
  • Prepare schedules and documentation as required

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Utilize construction accounting and project management systems (CMiC experience a plus)
  • Improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency

Operational Support & Risk Awareness

  • Perform tasks in an active and changing environment to support project teams and meet deadlines
  • Identify financial and operational issues, communicate them to leadership, and assist in solutions
  • Maintain a broad-based understanding of business risk and risk management

Subcontractor & Vendor Payment Oversight

  • Review and approve subcontractor pay applications for accuracy and compliance with contract terms
  • Request and obtain supplier and subcontractor lien releases as necessary prior to payment

Additional Duties

  • Remain flexible in a small business environment and adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Meet short timelines and imminent deadlines when required
  • Perform duties outside traditional accounting functions and “wear multiple hats”
Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • In lieu of a degree, there should be at least 20 years of accounting experience with a well-versed portfolio of roles within accounting. Controller role or similar for at least 10 years.
  • Strong background in construction accounting
  • Must have experience in U.S. Federal Government contracting
  • Experience with:
    • Job costing and WIP reporting
    • Construction contract accounting and contract support
    • Joint venture accounting (consolidation or equity pickup)
    • Payroll and certified payroll reporting
    • Bank and surety reporting
    • Working with external auditors and tax professionals
  • Thorough understanding of the Davis-Bacon Act and federal payroll compliance
  • Ability to work within a small team and manage all accounting functions for multiple construction entities

Preferred:

  • Experience with CMiC accounting and/or similar project management software
