Qualifications:
- Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from an accredited medical school; completion of an accredited residency program.
- Licensure: Active, unrestricted medical license in Virginia; DEA certification and National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Experience: Clinical experience preferred (correctional, public health, or underserved settings).
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMRs), diagnostic interpretation (labs, X-rays), and treatment protocols.
- Soft Skills: Strong decision-making, communication, teamwork, and adaptability. Compassionate approach to patient care in high-stress environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Medical Care Delivery: Conduct physical exams, diagnose/treat acute/chronic conditions, prescribe medications, and interpret diagnostic tests.
- Records Management: Maintain accurate, compliant documentation of patient care.
- Consultations & Referrals: Collaborate with specialists and the Department’s Office of Health Services for complex cases. Refer inmates to specialists when medically necessary.
- Emergency Care: Provide urgent medical services within the facility or local hospitals. Perform required employee health services, such as physical exams and emergency care.
- Compliance: Adhere to Department of Corrections policies, including confidentiality, licensure updates, and professional conduct. Notify the Department of any changes in licensure, hospital privileges, or malpractice issues.
- Scheduling: Submit monthly availability in advance and coordinate coverage during absences.
