About the Agency

The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce's (Department) mission is to support and apply necessary regulations to agricultural-related businesses within the state and to promote Mississippi's products throughout both the state and the rest of the world for the benefit of Mississippi citizens. The Department is dedicated to promoting and heightening the public's awareness of Mississippi's agricultural history, agricultural commodities, and the farmers and ranchers who produce them through participation in trade shows, conferences, and various other community agriculture-related organizations. Through its various bureaus, the Department seeks to protect the health and economic welfare in conjunction with the agricultural and horticultural interests of Mississippi. These activities include registering pesticides, feeds, seeds, fertilizers, and soil amendments, as well as permitting all pest control operators throughout the state. The Department conducts inspections of producers, grocery stores, meat establishments, fuel stations, and other commercial operations to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, including, without limitation, food safety and certification of weighing and measuring devices used in commerce. About the Position

This position is located in Forrest County, Mississippi, within the Weights and Measures Division of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, Bureau of Regulatory Services. The Consumer Protection Specialist I is a first-level professional position responsible for inspection and enforcement work related to statewide commerce. This includes scales and measuring devices used in trade and commerce, food safety, and fuel quality. The incumbent will assist with enforcing applicable state and federal rules and regulations, including guidance from agencies such as the USDA, EPA, and FDA, as well as applicable model laws and guidelines. Duties include collecting and testing samples, assisting with investigations of violations, gathering and securing information, maintaining reports, addressing noncompliance issues, and assisting with prosecution and enforcement actions as needed. The selected applicant for this Weights and Measures position will be assigned a heavy truck to conduct scale inspections in the assigned area. Therefore, a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License is required. This license is necessary to operate a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 26,001 pounds. Commercial Driver's License requirements and classifications are outlined in Miss. Code Ann. § 63-1-211(2). Applicants must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; standing and walking for extended periods; using hands and fingers to handle objects, tools, or controls; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or bending. Applicants must also be able to communicate effectively through speaking and listening, visually inspect objects, and use the senses of smell and taste to recognize and distinguish odors and flavors, as required by the duties of the position. A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License is required to regularly operate a state vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
